"Prodigal Son Returns" Episode

I can't believe the L.A. KISS are still in the playoff race despite all their losses.

It looked like there were a lot of empty seats in the Honda Center for the Spokane game. It didn't look like they were leading the league in attendance.

What happened to rookie quarterback Tyler Hansen? Did he get injured or get cut?

Is J.J. Raterink really a "prodigal son"?

I can't believe co-owner Brett Bouchy wanted the team to onside kick every time they kicked off. Onsides kicks seem more common in the Arena League. And field position isn't as important as at is with 100 yard football. But onsides kicks every time sounds excessive and ruins the element of surprise. Frank Haege loved the onsides kick when he was head coach of the New Jersey Gladiators.

Right, what kind of league is this when you are 3-12 and contending for a playoff spot?

I don't think they said they were leading the league in attendance, they said they were leading the league in season tickets. Still impressive, but not that surprising. Rabid Kiss fans plus people starved for pro football in LA, most likely.

The onsides kick thing seemed very amateurish, and almost just a gimmick to provide a subplot for the TV episode. Why is the owner calling the plays on how to run the team anyway?

I think you are right. They said the KISS led the league in season ticket sales. I don't plan on watching the episode again, but if I do I will listen more attentively.

I think the AFL expanded their playoff filed about ten years ago. In 2006 the Chicago Rush got into the playoffs with a 7-9 record then went on to win the ArenaBowl. They got hot at the right time. Fullback/linebacker Bob McMillen was named the Ironman of the Game. The Rush became the first team with a losing regular season record to win a championship in any sport since the 1937–38 Chicago Blackhawks.
