Haven’t seen this or The Artist
Just can’t bring myself to watch either.
share"The Artist" is derivative and forgettable, "LaLa Land" is a pretty good and unlike any other movie.
If "LaLa Land" hadn't been insanely overhyped upon release, people might appreciate it more. It's a good movie with a unique style, but it falls short of being mind-bogglingly amazing and shouldn't have been given all the awards in the world. For a while there the praise was so exaggerated that seeing the actual film was a letdown, when it shouldn't have been. It's actually quite good.
Good to know it's not super artsy fartsy. One critique I've read about it was that it was an overextended Glee episode. It's a musical, right? It's not like it's trying to be shallow. Have a copy of this, been meaning to watch this. Between Allaby and your comments, I will definitely give this a go.

I really liked this movie. I thought Emma and Ryan both did a great job . I didn’t overthink it, I just enjoyed it
shareFor musicals, it's all about taking in the show first. Your comment sums it up nicely.
Got the copy late last year, despite what I had read.

I actually saw it with my mom on Christmas Day. I treated her. We really enjoyed it.
shareMuch respect Cap'N, doing that for your mom. Glad it wasn't a chore, enjoying it with family.

My mom doesn’t like Christmas so we go to movies . We actually watch 4. We each pick 2
shareYour mom sounds great. I say that in a sonly way, of course. Christmas has become too commercial. What you're doing sticks true to the original theme when you think about it.

She picks the most boring emotional movies
shareI respect you even more for enduring those kinds of zero sum movies just for her.

Fences...

The picket kind with dried white paint on them!

My mom desperately wanted to see that movie. Wow was that ever long
shareDerivative and forgettable is sensational, delightful and, yes, memorable to others. Many others.
“The Artist” by no means tried to be original. It was simply a love letter to a bygone era (the nerve!) and it was executed very well. A big silent feature film in the modern era? In a way, that was refreshing to see. Whether La La Land offered something more unique or not is irrelevant. The two are equal love letters to old Hollywood and filmmaking.
Anyway, I know you’ve gone on record to say you’re too hard to impress so obviously there won’t be any convincing around here!
Actually, I consider myself easy to impress, at least when a movie offers me hot guys and lots of CGI.
Anyway, I wasn't impressed by "The Artist" but you were, and there we shall leave it. The person who asked about movies has two reasonable answers, and you don't talk people into liking movies or disliking them anyway.
Me neither, substitute La La Land for West Side Story and The Artist for Casablanca and you're good.

shareBoth are excellent.
shareOh well...
shareI try to avoid musical and it took me a while to watch La La Land but I need to admit I really enjoyed it and it's worth the watch. The story is pretty plain but the movie in itself is a masterpiece. I really recommend it. Much better than The Artist even if it was a nice homage.
shareYour gain of four hours. You haven't missed much, particularly "La La Land", a fifth-rate musical for people who aren't really familiar with musicals. Don't waste your time or money.
