I thought it had a lot good going for it. The cinematography, the music / score, dance choreography, pretty much everything that it won Oscars for.

But I also agree that it wasn't good enough to win the Best Picture or Screenplay.

If I were to say it in a single statement, I didn't feel like there was a good middle-glue between the development of the story (the first 2/3s of the film and this much was excellent) and the final outcome.

It wasn't heart wrenching. At most, it was sad that they couldn't make it work, like so many other relationships in real life. I needed this Hollywood tale to be bigger, much bigger than that. I wanted to cry because of the TRAGIC loss of true love. My takeaway should have been "I WOULD NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN!"

Instead I got [spoiler]"Meh, after I went to Paris, I fell in love with someone else and had a child"[/spoiler].

I did like their last glances after his musical piece of "what we could have been", but it wasn't enough.

7/10. Not bad, but I was hoping for an 8.

No. It's not that I needed them to end up together or to have an happy ending. I wanted it to be a more satisfying ending / last act regardless of how they ended up.

I agree 100%. It was good but not excellent, not amazing. A best picture contender should be superb. Same goes for Emma's performance. It was good, just good.

I'll agree somewhat with this assessment although I really do think Emma did a great job. The artistry going on here is also amazing and I liked they didn't go for the cookie cutter ending. It's a tad overrated though.

Yes, I felt like there was a part missing. They have this great love going, then she gets a movie part in Paris and he's going to open a jazz club at home - soooo, why does that keep them from being together? He's just says something like, "you have to put your whole self in it". Well that didn't keep her from marrying someone.

I felt like the movie had a message to put forth - that two people both can't realize their respective dreams together, even if they're in love. But I think it left out the part that would explain why not.

The movie jumps 5 years...and they give a hint after 3 months, the relation didn't seem to work as well as before. That coupled with her breakthrough is a recipe for disaster for a relationship like theirs. This is quite similar to real life. Distance works against any relationship, and not all couples end together.
My only problem with this movie is the music. I love jazz, and I really liked the jazz sessions. Still there is no big hit song...like the old My fair lady. I know this is different type of musical. Still, I think La La Land lacks a musical/song hit.
Dancing was OK, but not as good as some old movies. The introduction dance on cars was very good, though, and a great accomplishment.

The score was great. Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA award winner. And "City Of Stars" is very effective as the theme song of
the film-Oscar winner.
