Was this movie doomed to fail from the start?

Or did it flop mostly due to backlash of TLJ?

I don't know about doomed, but I think it certainly had an uphill battle from the get-go; "Han Solo's origin story" was never that interesting a premise to begin with.

Of course, the brilliant minds at the helm deciding that what Star Wars needed was making its protagonist of 40 years a pathetic, cowardly failure certainly didn't help it any.

Agree - in the time it took him fail at everything to try and get back to Qi'ra, up to and including being sentenced to death, SHE became a 'top lieutenant' in the big bad crime syndicate AND a Sith in training ... LOL.

Clearly the entire film was a setup to promote her instead, which is not a surprise.

It failed because it was BORING.

HOW do you make a movie about Han Sol BORING?

Is that not the same thing?
It was doomed to fail from the start due to backlash of TLJ
but even if there hadnt been a TLJ , it would still have been doomed from the start because Star wars fans a whiny impossible to please bitches who dont understand that it is them who have changed not the movies.

thats why there is "backlash of TLJ" - and every movie since ep 7

Kinda both. There was a lot of backlash about TLJ, but this had production troubles too. They got rid of the Lego movie guys, who apparently wanted to make it a comedy. Changing directors doesn't help. It shouldn't matter, but audiences see that and just bail on going to check out a movie.

Plus, let's be honest, a lot of people didn't want to see someone else play Han. I was like that myself and only saw this movie on a whim it's last week in theaters. I ended up loving it.
