Maybe it is time to create new franchises

I get that major motion film companies want to make money. But there will be a time when people want to see something different. Solo bombing might be an example of that.

In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, new franchises were being created and they worked well.

All of these sequels, prequels and reboots are getting tiresome.

Just create something new.

I totally agree. When I was growing up, at least one new movie would come out each summer with the potential to become a new franchise. Now, most of the great ideas are coming from TV or the internet, not cinema. I hardly bother going to the movies anymore.

Well, they tried to revive the Dark Universe with "The Mummy", "Dr. Jekyll", "Creature from the Black Lagoon", "Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Werewolf"...but the story writer for "The Mummy" f*cked it all up by making the Mummy a chick.

Fucking SJWs struck out again.

Idiots.

SJWism is NOT why The Mummy failed, it was because no-one in this day and age, and even people my age (45) care about those PREHISTORIC Universal monsters. Oh, James Rolfe is passionate about them, but then he's strange and old-fashioned.

reply

Depends on how you revive them.

The first Mummy movie with Brendan Fraser was the only watchable film and was a light-hearted nod to Hollywood’s golden age.

It should have ended there.

But the vision producers had of the Dark Universe was nothing but a half-assed “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”.

Why follow a FAILED model and in addition, stupidly feminize one of the classic monsters?

Boris Karloff’s Imhotep vs. that lameass ‘59 film with some chick playing Ahmanet?

No contest. Nobody’s scared of a chick.

Men who actually have women companions are smart enough to respect them.

You, not so much.

Oh, that’s just too good. You couldn’t have written that yourself. I am cut to the quick, and flattered that you’d spend money on a Hollywood jokemeister to craft such subtle wit for you.

reply

They should start making the Deathstalker books into movies. Eat your heart out, Star Wars.

Or maybe we could move away from the monopoly of franchise film making. The cultural wreckage of the last 40 years or so wrought by studio greed and lack of originality is starting to pile up. I'm frankly worried about the anti-Star Wars cancer (mostly deserved) spreading to the original films themselves, which would be a shame, in my opinion.

reply

Don't worry about that, the original trilogy is in no danger.

Well, there actually are some new recently created franchises (or at least planned / set up to be a franchise.) Some are quite succesfull, some outright bombed.

Pacific Rim
Kingsman
Deadpool
Despicable Me
Annabelle
Now You See Me
Fifty Shades
LEGO Movies
John Wick
Pitch Perfect
The Purge
Split
Den of Thieves
King Arthur
Assassin's Creed
Atomic Blonde
Red Sparrow
Ready Player One

I thought it was because big blockbuster movies, like "triple-a" videogames, were so INSANELY EXPENSIVE to develop, that they want to recoup the costs and not take risks, or play it safe and familiar in other words.

reply

We need more modest budgeted, say A or AA movies, like Deadpool, Logan, Sicario, Split, etc. They feel fresh, unlike bloated movies like Star Wars.
