Ron Howard Is New Director

He's talented. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does.

He's been pretty boring for a long time now imo. I didn't like the Dan Brown books he did at all. He's very bland these days. In the Heart of the Sea was a drag.

Kennedy and co. appear to know what they want for a Star Wars movie so Howard's going to have limited freedom anyway. Howard's only completing the film since most of it was done. "In the Heart of the Sea" was a boring subject which has been done to death in the past. He's made many good films in the past so he has the talent.

I wouldn't mind seeing his brother Clint get a cameo.

Seems like kind of a weird, random choice. He's had a very hit or miss career and, personally, I haven't even been a fan of his hits. I guess they needed a veteran director to deal with the chaos of such a short notice change.

I didn't have high hopes for this movie anyway. I've always thought Han Solo was overrated and if Rogue One was any indication, these anthology movies aren't gonna be that great.

Only thing that gives me hope is "Rush" from 2013 made by him.

None of you guys seen Far and Away?

It's clearly an Abrams inspirational list movie, at least for writing.

I think it will be middle of the road and that's fine by me, even keel over silliness which is all over the ship.

I do hope he steps up a confident notch though.

he was in American graffitti with Harrison Ford and directed by George Lucas. So why not. Hilarious how Disney has basically taken over Hollywood

reply

Me too, but the deck is stacked because he is only directing half of it. Literally a hack job that will basically make the editor director #3.

Shame. Ron Howard is a very capable director, and he has some films I absolutely love, but for a film like this, you want the kind of unique and energetic approach that Lord/Miller would have certainly brought.

So far Lord/Miller are 4 for 4 on taking concepts that sound terrible and making something excellent.
- turning a 32 page children's book into a full length feature
- comedic adaptation of a 1980's tv show
- a movie based on a series of toys
- a comedy sequel (seriously, comedy sequels are almost always terrible)

All four of those should have been disasters and yet the weakest of the four was still a solid B (22 Jump Street).
A Han Solo origin story is just the kind of risky idea they excel at.

Entertainment Weekly just ran a story about how producers are becoming more powerful than directors with movie franchises. Lord/Miller are just the latest directors to be fired.

The Han Solo movie still needs to feel like a Star Wars movie and fit within that universe which Kennedy needs to coordinate therefore their creativity is going to be very limited.

from ET article:
"Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, among others, have elevated the role of producer into an artistic one, mapping out overarching and interconnected story lines not just for one film but for entire extended universes. They have often come to supplant the director as the dominant force in the filmmaking process, telling the stories while the directors execute them.

In a way, movies are adapting a model pioneered in TV. Think of the creative ambition of executive producers Shonda Rhimes on Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder, or Ryan Murphy bringing his twisted sensibility to American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Feud. Rhimes and Murphy are brands, and few would disagree that they’re artists.

...So where does this leave directors? Those who succeed in this new model can adapt to a franchise’s existing tone and still maintain their creative freedom. James Gunn, for example, did just that with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. It’s also why J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Rian Johnson (Looper), writer-director of the next Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, have had little trouble thriving in the Lucasfilm atmosphere.

Sources close to Lord and Miller tell EW that the duo came aboard the Solo movie expecting to make “a Phil and Chris film.” But when it comes to the Star Wars universe, the one who wields the Force is Kathleen Kennedy."
