Creepy theory about the ending - SPOILER

We´re talkinga bout Gaspar Noe. The guy who came up with those crazy ideas seen in "Irreversible" and others alike. Wouldn´t be surprised if his real intentions about the ending, were as follows:

What on earth happened to that BABY, and why did he start crying?
Maybe I am going too far, but I think the father raped him, even if it wasn´t his intention. Because, see, while he was in the bathtub, he was already going crazy over Elektra... thinking about bathing with her and doing whatelse would come to his mind. Then the baby walks in, and what do we see on the next scene? He is crying in his father´s arms, while Murphy is saying "Gaspar, I´m so sorry, life is not easy. Please forgive me, I am lost..."

Add that to the extra-tip theory that the mother of his kid showed up before the scene, as if she KNEW what could have happened, and -in a way- she was already fed up with him drooling all over Elektra all the time. She was fed up. So, as a way to give him a taste of his own medicine, release the little lamb to the big wolf, as payback.

Just thinking that, coming from Gaspar Noe, anything is possible.

Nah.

Perhaps he was apologizing to his family for not being emotional invested in them since he was still hung up on Electra. Or maybe he was apologizing for bringing the kid into a world he considered unfair, or for wishing it was Electra's kid, or any number of reasons.

If you want to go the non-literal route, I'd be willing to agree that maybe the business with his wife and son checking in on him was not "real," and that he committed suicide to join Electra in the afterlife. But I wouldn't put too much credence in that myself.

I admit that the ending is somewhat vague, but the rape angle is totally out of sync with the mood and sentimentality of the film.

This is a very, very crazy theory. Although I think it is far from what Gaspar intended to record, I must admit that my opinion and theory about ending of this film will be slightly different.

I thought about that as well when I saw the jump cut to the kid, undressed in the tub, crying. But then when the screen turned red in the end, I thought maybe the father killed himself and the boy.

But the most important thing here is that we don't know and Noé himself probably doesn't know. But that's not the most important thing in this film. What you should really be looking at, I think, is how uncontrolled emotion, passion and relationships can be such destructive forces.

Actually in my world, the father and the boy and even Elektra all still live and maybe after some time Elektra would contact the protagonist again to let him know she's fine.
Because what's really tormenting him is that he doesn't know what happened to her and that he fears she's done bad things to herself because of his mistake.. He hasn't been forgiven and that is an incredibly heavy burden to carry around you.. really this is dark, dark *beep*

Also when the story starts, the protagonist is severely hung over and feels like *beep* which is why he comes across as if he's really depressed and is able to break down at any moment.. but this doesn't mean that he really will break down. His apartment is neat, the baby seems in good health.. yeah he's getting older and at that moment he gets a call from Elektra's mother who probably unintentionally opens up a very badly healed scar. So this transports him back to his past with Elektra and all these emotions rise to the surface again and he realizes that he is still fighting his demons. In my mind, when he talks to his kid, apologizing, I think he really knows he doesn't want this for the kid. And therefor I think eventually he'll pick himself up again and live his life in dedication of the kid, who represents what should have been: him and elektra together.

I think Murphy killed his self but no way would he harm the boy

reply

I agree, no way he would harm his boy and he might be apologizing him for the suicide he's gonna make to be, at least in his anguished, delusive mind with Electra again. If she did kill herself, which was presumed.

w-vids, second paragraph, wonderful thought, I couldn't agree more!

reply

Omg you are so way off. Absolutely not. He loved that child, and was grieving in the tub with his memories. The mother had peeked in, saw him crying, and let the kid go in. To remind him of what he does have.

your theory is very good and sounds very gaspar but i think his intentions were different for the kid crying in shower scene.
