A simple but effective little film

Ashby is a witty indie film that strikes a balance between overt sentimentality and hipster understatement: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/reviews/ashby/

In total agreement with the review. I also give it a 7/10. It's a pretty minor movie, so I might very well have given a 6, but I'm in a good mood, and... how could I not enjoy a movie where Mickey Rourke reminds us of how good he is ? Plus, there's Emma Roberts.

Until this movie, I didn't know what to think of Nat Wolff's acting. I've seen the very chatty Palo Alto (another one with Emma Roberts) and the pretty insipid Paper Towns, and both left me unconvinced. But he's good in Ashby. Talking about Paper Towns : here's an example of a bad hipster movie, while Ashby is a nice one.

- No. But I'm afraid of you.

For me this was almost one of those "so bad it's good" type films. Overall I did not click with any of the characters and thought they seemed particularly contrived. I also thought the acting was uneven and mostly stiff. But the situations were so rediculous, I mostly just laughed at the absurdity of the whole thing.
