Eastbound + Down

How does this compare? Is it the same type of comedy? If so il have to start watching this ASAP

reply

It's exactly the same kind of comedy, same lead actor, same writer, same director.

And oh, by the way, it's great. I recommend you watch it. But give it 2 or 3 episodes. Like Vice Principals, you have to give it a chance to grow on you.

reply

The OP is asking about Vice Principals, not Eastbound. However, same advice applies.

reply

Oh, my bad. But yeah, it's the same advice either way like you said...lol.

Same personnel, but I disagree that "Vice Principals" is the exact same kind of comedy. It is darker than "Eastbound". The more Eastbound goes over the top, the harder I laugh. And that is a show where I can laugh and laugh for minutes on end.

When "Principals" goes over the top, like when the house was torched, I cringe or take a deep breath. Not that I don't laugh out loud at other times.

When Lee Russell spit into his boss's coffee, I was repelled more than amused. If a similar thing happened on "Eastbound", it would be made funnier. I think partly it's that the pacing on "Eastbound" is faster because they are always looking ahead to the next joke. They don't dwell on things, the way the camera in "Principals" dwelt on the spittle.

I think the situation with the noisy neighbor would have been handled differently on "Eastbound". It was too heavy-handed.

The characters played by McBride are quite different, too. Both Neil Gamby and Kenny Powers are deluded in their self-assessment. Kenny Powers is way over the top egotistical but he did have natural showmanship and charisma. Gamby on this show is more diffident and kind of a creep, although you feel some sympathy for him.

Both shows use music very well.

I agree with your points. I shouldn't have said "exactly the same" because you're right, they're not exactly the same. But I do think the 2 shows are very similar (even though VPs is a little darker, as you said). I also think if you like one show, there's a good chance you'll like the other, as I do.

True but eastbound relied a lot on drug use as a form of shock value which i thought was often times hilarious but Kenny's drug abuse was dark in itself. It's refreshing to see they aren't relying on scenes in which hard drugs are used to get people to gasp.

reply

I agree about the music in this show is so well done!

reply

Good points. I think VP is similar to Season 3 of EB & D, when it started to get really dark with Kenny being lonely and depressed, and Shane dying from the Coke Overdose.

reply

If you love VP you'll love Eastbound. I'm surprised at my age I still love potty-mouth humor and the F word does just happen to be my favorite ? Both are used aplenty in Eastbound too.

reply

Eastdown was a better show and funnier, but Principals has better storytelling.

I might be in the minority here, but I like VP more than Eb&D. I just got through the second season of Eastbound and I find Kenny to be a thoroughly unlikable character. At least Gamby has a few redeeming qualities. Plus the supporting cast is much better in VP's in my opinion.

Hello pants

If you liked Eastbound & Down, you'll like this. Same kind of comedy. But I think Gamby is less realistic than Powers. I don't think a vice principal could get away with talking the way he does. But I believe a real life Kenny Powers would actually do the crazy $h!+ seen in Eb&D.
