Vice Principals may be a worthy successor to Eastbound & Down

There are two sublime moments in the first episode of HBO’s new series Vice Principals. The first takes no more than ten seconds, and takes place in the first two minutes of the show. It’s an exchange between Danny McBride’s Neal Gamby and Walton Goggins’ Lee Russell, an exercise in swearing that carries as such a clip that it transcends how dumb the things the men are saying actually are. It’s also an easy distillation of the central conceit of the show: the two men are just as immature as the high schoolers they jockey to rule. Judging from the pilot, Vice Principals may be a worthy successor to Eastbound & Down, which was, for my money, one of HBO’s best. While the premise might initially feel like a retread, Jody Hill and Danny McBride have something fresh on their hands with the addition of Walton Goggins to the mix. Kimberly Hébert Gregory, as Dr. Belinda Brown, is the final part of the ultimately three-part act: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/tv/tv-reviews/vice-principals-principal/

It basically is Eastbound and Down, minus the baseball.

Danny McBride has no range. He's played the same character in everything he has ever been in. Not that I have a problem with that. I enjoy that character and look forward to watching this series.

I loved season 1 of Eastbound and down, but the subsequent seasons were just too much of the same sh*t. This show started off really rough. The only thing I really liked about it were Dr Brown little monologue to Mcbride's character and Ray the ex wife's new husband. Other than that, it was just more of the same McBride. The guy has no range. Goggins, as good of an actor that he is, just didn't do it for me. I'll give it a 5 episode trial, and it does have potential. The last 5 minutes were pretty good.

I feel the same way. E&D was funny for a season or two but it gets tired quick for me when the main character just constantly acts like a jerk, and seems surprised that nobody likes him. I'm three episodes into VP and may stop watching or will skip through some of the scenes with McBride.

Stick with it. I love Eastbound and Down but the season finale of Vice Principals definitely makes just those 8 episodes alone better than all of Eastbound. So excited for the second season.
