Near the end about Biedronka

I'm not sure if I missed a detail or something during the movie, but I did get a little confused near the end of the film.

In the scene where Biedronka is sitting in the abandoned hospital surrounded by the injured children, there comes a german soldier with a mask. He crouches in front of her, smiles and mimics a kiss to her. Next thing we see her on that sand-island in the river unharmed.

Did I miss something or how did she end up there unharmed?

Came here to ask same question. Or maybe was Stefan having a hallucination about her? When they show the shot from distance with city burning there seems to be only one person on that sand island.

Raylan Givens: I'm going to need an ambulance, and a coroner.

reply

Yes, you are actually correct! I just re-watched the end, and I noticed only one person sitting on that sand island.

reply

The woman is Ala not Biedronka. Biedronka (ladybug) was the brunette.

I think Ala was raped and murdered in the hospital and her appearance at the end was merely wishful thinking by Stefan. Perhaps Komasa left this bit ambiguous so you could believe they lived happily ever after if you wish.

reply

Nope, the brunette girl is Kama . The blonde one is Biedronka. Check imdb page for actors.

Raylan Givens: I'm going to need an ambulance, and a coroner.

reply

Sorry about that, I was confused! How embarrassing, I met the three young actors after a screening of the film at a film festival in Cottbus Germany. They are very nice people.

reply

No problem :). So, what is you opinion, did Biedronka died and was there in that pile of dead bodies and she was an imagination of Stefan or she really was in the end on that sand island?

Raylan Givens: I'm going to need an ambulance, and a coroner.

reply

I really want to believe she survived, so I will believe that. I am an American but I live in Poland and I would like to think I could go to Warsaw and meet her and Stefan in their old age, surrounded by their grandchildren and great grandchildren. When you walk the streets in Warsaw and there are these little plaques everywhere, on a building or a marker on the street, so many people were killed here, so many there, it is chilling. The last scene in the film when the scene fades from Warsaw destroyed and burning to the modern city all lit up was so powerful and so true. Warsaw is like the phoenix, rising from the ashes. I have a good friend that has an apartment in Wola, right next to the large cemetery that was the scene of the first big battle. Wola was where over 30,000 innocent civilians were murdered as shown when Stefan's mother and brother were killed in the film. It is said tha all of Warsaw is a grave yard. Polish people are wonderful and very tough.

reply

She was right there near the bottom of the pile of bodies, clad in her blue dress. The scene is a bit dark, so increase the brightness a bit when you re-watch. 👀

Because of discussions with the Allies the Polish home army was given the rights of soldiers fighting for their country ie Geneva convention rights,

those without uniform were caught tortured raped and killed by "Bandit" hunters at the end

and then the soviet arm walked into Warsaw after waiting for a month for the Germans to purge the city for them...

It was more than a month. The Uprising ended in early October 1944; the Germans didn't leave Warsaw until January 1945 after having destroyed what was left under Hitler's order for four months. It is disgusting that the Soviets didn't help the Poles, but with hindsight what to expect after Katyn and them taking Lviv and Vilnus after the Poles liberated the cities from the Germans.
