How many years until they release an American version of this film?

I'd guess two years, tops?

It was recently released in the L.A. area. We saw it today at a Regency Theater near the So. Coast Plaza in Orange Co.

OP means a version with an American cast, in order to make it more "international."

I had the thought that it could be remade, since there is little that couldn't be translated culturally.

However, they would probably destroy the movie's chief charm, which is that Suzu, though troubled in many ways, doesn't act that way at all, and is generally a happy person despite her "issues." I doubt they would trust American audiences with anything so subtle.

To make more or less the same point from a Hollywood screenwriter's P.O.V. -- the movie is almost devoid of obvious conflict. A Hollywood version would likely invent some big conflict that rears its head as soon as Suzu moves in and which drives the whole story. Alternately, they would make a big deal about the mother's plan to sell the house, and make her somewhat of a villain. But that she tosses off the idea unthinkingly, and backs down as soon as she realizes what it would actually mean, is realistic and one of the things that makes the movie so good.

Now, there are many indie directors who could remake this, but I'm not sure what the point would be. That audience can fully enjoy the Japanese version.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

Many years it seems...Koreeda's movies don't seem the type to be remade by Western filmmakers.
Movies like Steel Magnolias and Hannah and her sisters already are the Hollywood equivalents I guess.
