The wall is symbolic. The real time aspect of it is what creates the suspense. In the Israeli version I saw, singers would be paired up and compete for the highest score. I'm not sure if that aspect of the show will carry over to this one. There was so much tension when the second performer came on. Sometimes they would fall just short of raising the wall and you would hear the whole audience sigh. On the other hand, the audience would just go nuts whenever the wall was raised, and the singer would have to continue to perform amid all the excitement and pressure. It really is a genius concept and I still don't think the majority of people really understand what this show could be if done right.
It's a shame that the premiere got such bad reviews because the Israeli version was so brilliant. A lot of the problems of this version (besides it being only 10 episodes) is that the US has different time zones, and the population size is much bigger, which means that peoples votes count for less.
Here is what I would change. Increase the number of episodes, have each show be one hour, air it live across the country, and increase the number of auditioners. Then this show can truly live up to its potential.
