They should have gone with the orignal ending

Having Darth Vader murder the Rogue One crew instead of a bunch of faceless rebels would have been so much more horrifying. Plus, it would have integrated Vader more seamlessly into the story. The Dark Lord's big moment at the end, as it stands, still kicks ass ... but it's hard to shake the feeling that it's tacked on -- that we're witnessing fan service of the most electrifying, and pandering, variety when we should be an audience to the main characters' tragic destiny that flows naturally from the story.

You make a good point there. I didn't know that was the original ending. It would have been quite powerful and dark, left a much greater impression.

If they had it probably would have made people even more uncomfortable than they already are with "Jedi" and the ridiculous part where Vader, mass-murdering psychopath, saves his son and -- nose twitch -- is suddenly a hero! Maybe in the final installment of the next Freddy Krueger reboot Freddy will spare one of the teens he's stalking and -- nose twitch-- will be a hero too!

BINGO

I had no idea that was the original end. I agree it would have been better and that the Vader scene, as is, definitely feels like an afterthought.

I don't know, I think death by Death Star made for an ending that was heartbreaking and every so slightly bittersweet. There was that moment of quiet affection and dignity, the reflection that the insane seat-of-the-pants plan had worked, that the Rebellion had a chance... even if the two of them don't.

The ending was so grim, I think it needed that little bit of calm and peace, not to mention a the really spectacular CGI.
