Thoughts upon Re-watching Rogue One... (minor spoilers)

So, I saw this for the second time last night. Here are some thoughts about it.

1. Vader's henchmen is Snoke! The one that approached the bacta tank and said that Krennic was there to see Vader. Only a quick look, but they seemed similar enough. Who else could it be?

2. I want a Baze and Chirrut spinoff. How the Temple fell, and some of their adventures since then. They're an adorable pair, and I love their dynamics. Too bad we can't have any sequels with them...

3. CGI Tarkin and Leia weren't really too horrible. The first time I watched it, I wasn't aware they were CGI, so whenever Tarkin appeared I was trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Was he wearing a waxy prosthetic mask? Nope. Knowing they were CGI, I could marvel over how realistic they looked.

"Vader's henchmen is Snoke! "

I will keep an eye out for that when I get my blue-ray player working! What a cool idea, if true!

Truth to tell, I was so busy thinking "Ooooh, lava, way cool..." to notice a detail like that. I love volcanoes.

reply

Lol. I loved the lava castle, too.

Definitely keep your eyes peeled for the henchman; they only show his face for a split second. 😉

I just thought of something else...

4. The Empire literally destroyed their main archives just to be rid of a few rebels and Krennic. Really? They should have back-ups of those files somewhere, otherwise Vader and Sidious wouldn't be happy...

reply

They had everything synced to Dropbox

reply

Lol.

Seriously, though. Why bother having all their archives in one place if they just end up nuking it? That's shooting themselves in the foot pretty badly.

reply

It doesnt really make sense, but I had the feeling Tarkin wanted Krennic out of the picture and if he had to blow up some backup tapes (and backup tape technicians!) to make that happen, so be it.

reply

I suppose that could be it. Still doesn't make much sense, but oh well. Being such a sprawling Empire, they probably did have backups/copies somewhere.

reply

They thought they could stop the rebels from getting a hold of the plans. Pretty high priority to stop them obviously :P

reply

I don't think it was Snoke.

reply

Eh, it could be. It'd be cool if it was. But if it wasn't, I won't be heartbroken.

That guy was an ordinary human:

Snoke was either an alien or a drastically disfigured human:

This, combined with your inability to tell the difference between Vader's servant and Snoke, makes me think that you either have very poor eyesight or you watch movies on a 20-inch TV from 20 feet away. Tarkin was obviously a cartoon, and Leia was even more obviously a cartoon. Cushing at least had the lines/weathering/texture in his face that are part and parcel of being an old man, and those helped him look a little more realistic when translated to CGI, but Fisher was a 21-year-old woman in '77, which made her a very difficult candidate for CGI. And even if they had've managed to make the skin look realistic, the jig is up as soon as the cartoons start talking, because the facial muscle movements were all wrong for both Tarkin and Leia. Not just wrong relative to their respective real-life counterparts, but wrong relative to humans in general.

reply

Nah. Snoke is just a badly thought out character

Sly Moore (Palpatine's Chief Advisor), Grand Vizier Mas Amedda or Darth Plagueis would of been a better use of villian rather than newbie Snoke.

Unfortunately what hurts them is you know its CGI thus people are more critical of it. Tarkin was mostly well done and passes if you dont study and nitpick at him. Leia was not as well done but for as little as she is on screen it doesn't matter much. I generally just look at it this way, what would I rather have? Characters that look like the originals or actors that look nothing like the originals replacing them. I would rather have a CGI Tarkin than a complete replacement. So this worked for me.
