Disappointing lack of female characters

The movie itself was okay, but I was especially disappointed that there were barely any women in the film, and they hardly got to interact with each other. Out of the entire Rebellion only a small handful of women are there? And it was also disappointing how Jyn was the only woman in her group and didn't get to recruit other women to be part of it. Nor did she get to have any female friends. It's funny to me how the makers of the film claim it to be a feminist film because of having a female lead and yet a lack of female characters never crossed their mind that they actually failed in that aspect. I and many other people were hoping that with a film like The Force Awakens, which was a HUGE step in the right direction, that they would continue to do so with these anthology films, but they utterly failed.

Now I'm sure some of you will complain about this post for any reason, but considering the fact that since the beginning of time, women have been seen as less than men and have continued to be underrepresented in film and tv and other forms of media time and time again, it's hard not to be disappointed and depressed.

How come there is only one male actor in the new Oceans 8 movie? How come there is no Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue featuring men?

reply

Ocean eight is a all female version of Ocean's eleven.

lots of magazines featuring male model out there.

-It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything-

So its ok if a movie is all female but if a movie is dominated by male actors that is bad. Name one male model magazine that is as popular as the Sports Illustrated magazine?

reply

Thats because men like to look at magazines of women with revealing clothing on and, weirdly, women also like to look at magazines with scantily clad women in them. (Glamour / cosmo / heat / etc etc )

That's just a retarded statement right there... Sports Illustrated is a MENS MAGAZINE. It's like you saying why isn't Playboy or Penthouse having male models or more popular than (insert other mag). Sex sells and it's mostly dominated by women cause men pay for them. Supply and demand, also why women are dangerous or can be cause men's brain are mostly fap fap (not all but most since it's just animalistic instinct type thing).

I agree with you 100%. :)

I only counted 7 women total. Rogue One would be very progressive with female representation - in 1977. Way less than The Force Awakens. #SausageFest I think it's wonderful that Jyn was Rogue One's female lead, but that's no excuse to shortchange women on female representation. Only 1 female, and no women of color, in Star Wars' main cast should not be acceptable in 2017. After The Force Awakens' cast reveal backlash in 2014, you'd think they'd know better.

I wish Lucasfilm had a general policy where half the cast of every Star Wars film was a diverse group of women, from leads to extras. Why not reflect the real world? Too often, characters are "white male" or "male" default, which screws over women. All the Star Wars writers and directors continue to be white men.

Every Star Wars female lead, from 1977 to the upcoming films, is a white brunette. Not even a blonde in the mix. All of them remind me of Kathleen Kennedy. It feels like black women are more likely to play aliens in Star Wars than human beings. An Oscar winner played an old bland alien while several white women got to be the female lead.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

One woman leads the Rebellion. Mon Mathma.
Jyn Erso is the Leqd character of the film and leads to a strategic victory in the movie.
The plans are carried by Princess Leia to the rebel base before she got caught in ANH.
The attack is also supported by General Syndulla (not appearing on screen, but her ship is). Which is also a female pilot, tactician and leader.

4 of the main leaders and literally strategic deciders/influencers are female.

I think that's not bad at all. Yes, they are few females in the movie, but they basically carry the whole strategy of the rebels.

And it should come as no surprise that the bulk of the fighters in a war the scale of million WWII are men.

There is plenty important females in this film! What rubbish are u talking? Honestly. Why do people like you care what colour someone is in a movie, honestly I never look and see a character and get upset over their colour. That is so pathetic. If u really wanted to sound so progressive then why not complain how like 80% of everone is human when it’s a big galaxy, you’d imagine the human race would be just a minute fraction.

The most important person in the film is a woman and the coolest person is Donnie yen (oriental).

Not to sound rude but does it help you get through it when u realise Vader Tarkin the emperor and other bad guy in white robes are all white males?

"I wish Lucasfilm had a general policy where half the cast of every Star Wars film was a diverse group of women, from leads to extras. Why not reflect the real world?"

That doesn't even remotely reflect the real world, SJW. Rogue One is a military movie, and the e.g., U.S. military is comprised of about 16% women, with hardly any of that already low percentage being in combat roles. Logically, there shouldn't be any women in the military in the Star Wars universe. As advanced as they are, they should have long since moved past the laughable 20th century Earth idea of making their military weaker just for the sake of "political correctness." When all else is equal, the military with the most women will lose.

I also didn't like how they killed off Jyn's mother for no real reason. They do that so often in movies. That, or ignore them altogether. It's almost always the father who's important to the protagonist.

I wish Jyn and Lyra were a mother-daughter women of color duo that led a diverse team of men and women. It's be both refreshing and inclusive.

how on Yavin is Rogue One any less progressive than The Force Awakens? Both had female leads that had limited interaction with other women ( I don't count Rey's VERY limited interaction with Maz orange yoda, who is a creature and a complete underutilization of the massively talented Lupita Nyong'o but I digress). Who were Rey's female friends ? Which woman did she recruit again?

Let's do a headcount, shall we?

Rogue One:
Three female pilots
Two Alliance leaders
Jyn
Jyn's Mother

The Force Awakens:
One female pilot
Leia
Two female resistance members
A First Order informant
Phasma
Rey

In context, both films treat women in the same fashion. The " HUGE step in the right direction" leaves the same footprint that Rouge One left. If you think Rogue One took the treatment of females in a retroactive direction, it Isn't Rogue One you should be looking at, but The Force Awakens. Sorry, but it sounds you just liked one film more than the Other and you are grasping at straws to validate your unhappiness.

I agree that Disney needs to pull it together to represent women with an equal and balanced approach. But it was not remedied in the Force Awakens. So far all I see is ad nauseum

reply

I'd like to add that Captain Phasma was an insult to female fans of the franchise. She was beefed up in promotion as this strong female badass. When the film was released, it illustrated her as quite the opposite - a milquetoast bureaucrat who stood around and took orders from her male superiors and then was thrown in the garbage by another group of men.

As a woman, I found this insulting. Rogue One never stooped to such a level with any of their female characters

reply

Did you notice Phasma never even fired her blaster once? Why wasn't she used in any of the action scenes? Not only was she greatly underused, they had her betray the First Order without even putting up a fight. Phasma deserves to be executed for treason.

Why Star Wars: The Force Awakens' a poorly-made film: https://youtu.be/8g9cJ5WKZeU

reply

Luckily for her, she can expect to get a much lighter sentence than a man would for committing the same crime and will most likely walk away with a suspended sentence.

reply

And far less likely to be subject to sexual assault while incarcerated.

reply

I’m sure you did. Of course you watched and felt literal insult that character in a movie wasn’t beefy enough for you. What an absolute sheltered life u must lead to be left so angered by this. My only hope for you is that some other fictional character in this movie could be such a complete awesome badass .... oh wait

If you don't like the way sexes are represented in a film then it is actually 'you' who is the sexist.

reply

sex·ism\?sek-?si-z?m\
noun
: unfair treatment of people because of their sex ; especially : unfair treatment of women
Full Definition
1 : prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women
2 : behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex

reply

So if I don't like the use of sexism in a film than that makes me a sexist? Am I getting that right? That's your logic, yes?

reply

It's because most women in a galaxy far, far away are in the kitchen where they belong.

reply

So you guys want more women in the new Star Wars movies? These movies have been undergoing quite a ton of backlash from fans who accuse them of political correctness. By any chance, did you end up having any kind of disagreement or argument with them? How did that turn out?

As for me, I would be pretty skeptical if I am expecting a surprisingly even amount of men and women in locations and groups like armies and rebellions, where they were expected to be mostly men. But I can't judge anything until I see the actual result in such movies.

Ever watch Firefly and its movie, Serenity? Now there's an example of better gender balance.
