Tantalising and disappointing (slight spoilers)

The end of the film shows how close Hitchcock and Truffaut became yet the film spent more time with mainstream American directors discussing Hitchcock. I wanted to know more about Hitchcock and Truffaut, especially when Hitchcock asked for the tape to be stopped. I admire both directors immensely and it was their names and relationship I wanted. Yet there are some gems. The menage a trois with Bergman and Grant. Vertigo as a necrophiliac fantasy. The juxtaposition of Hitchcock film stills with Truffaut's. Hitchcock's face over the decades. The epilogue, which was so emotional whilst factual. A wonderful experiment that did not quite succeed.

Disclaimer: Yes I know there were French directors speaking too before some smart Alec happens along. Nonetheless it's Americentric.

Totally agree, it was a missed opportunity to get immerse into what is considered one of the most fascinating discusions between world class filmmakers and to see what happened there apart from what's on the book. I'm still waiting for the second half when they discuss Truffaut, at least, in the same way.

But I've realised that this is something regular in docs about filmmakers, I saw recently De Palma and it has a few interesting anecdotes told directly from the director but, he basically talked about the excecution and studios, not something about the creative process or why he does what he does with his characters, not to sound bitchy but it was a whining session more than anything.

The off the record parts are off the record. There's no record of them. They are private conversations.

There are documentaries about Hitchcock and there are documentaries about Truffaut. This film is about the interviews, the book that Truffaut published and its effect on film-makers. The effect was that it legitimised Hitch as an artists in American audience's eyes in a way that French film-makers and audiences already perceived him.
