WHOOPING COUGH

IN EPISODE 1.4, GEORDIE'S INFANT SON IS TERRIBLY ILL WITH WHOOPING COUGH. THERE WAS A VACCINATION (THE DPT) FOR THAT YEARS EARLIER. IT SEEMS STRANGE THAT THE CHILD WAS NOT VACCINATED FOR THAT. IN A CIVILIZED COUNTRY LIKE ENGLAND AND IN A LOCATION NEAR CAMBRIDGE (NOT EXACTLY 3RD WORLD) WEREN'T THEY USING VACCINES LONG IN USE IN THE LATE 1940'S?

Back in 2012 in the UK there was an outbreak with over 9000 cases. In the US last year 2014 there were 28k cases. It's still a big problem. My doctor even have me a booster a few weeks back since adults can carry out and give it to infants.

The efficacy rate for the TDaP vaccine is 80%-85%, about the same as the annual flu vaccine. WC (pertussis) is airborne like measles though less contagious.

I know there's a schedule for vaccinations (certain number of months). Maybe the baby wasn't ready for the vaccine yet (still had a few months before he could have it).

just saw your comment (new series of GRANCHESTER starts in the UK tomorrow).
I had whooping cough when I was a kid,I had been vaccinated but it was still serious condition, coughing all the time and not sleeping or eating well,I was 7 or 8 if a little kid got it it would be even worse for them.

I am sure that somewhere on the web you could get the percentage of kids vaccinated for each year but some people don't believe in that stuff and the health service had not been going long at that time and they were living in a rural area.

My sister (b 1952) had whooping cough at the age of 7; she had been vaccinated.

I'm the clever one; you're the potato one.
