His children are very young

Mother is in the hospital. They just hauled drunk father off to jail. And left three kids who looked to be under eight years of age alone in that nasty shack.

Is that irresponsible or it assumed they've been taking care of themselves all along?

I assumed the mom came home soon after, also in those days it wasn't unusual for neighbors to pull together and keep an eye on the children.

Irresponsible or not, I suspect the children were safer without Dad in the house than with!
