Geordie's secret (possible SPOILER)

What do you think was Geordie's secret which drove him to commit the odd behaviors he had done in the past few episodes, e.g., his drinking, one-night stand with Margaret, pushing Sidney away in the past few episodes, etc.

Do you think it has something to do with his WWII experience (like Sidney) or something else, like his job insecurity or some middle-age stuffs as he's probably about to push 50 in the series.

Or a combination of these? What's your take?

reply

I'm going with drinking. He was always a drinker but the thing about his son nearly dying showed he has feet of clay and really is helpless in the face of life's big problems.

Oh, and I forgot the getting shot. That left him in a permanent state of fear of a repetition.

Prediction:

I think its the war - Geordie's been very cagey about his experiences, but we know he was in Burma, and that was not a good place to be:

It might feed into his focus on needing justice - many former POW felt cheated when Japanese war criminals had their sentences commuted:

Sidney feels guilt as a killer, and so he empathises with the perpetrators - he needs to see truth and forgiveness
Geordie feels guilt as a survivor, and so he empathises with the victims and their survivors - he needs to see truth and retribution

reply

Geordie was a POW (prisoner of war), he was most likely tortured by the Japanese and forced to work on the Burma Railway.

reply

Yes. Everything becomes clear now after the series finale. I think it's the first time he told Sidney (and the audience) about his experience in Burma.

reply

When did Geordie have a one night stand with Margaret? Last season? I don't remember that. I like Sidney with Margaret, much more than with Amanda or Hildegard. Really didn't like Hildegard.

reply

There was no one night stand; he kissed her and it happened off screen.

I'm the clever one; you're the potato one.

reply

I think they did more than just kissing, as Geordie's wife told Sidney that her husband was having an affair in S2E5, and Margaret gave Geordie a dirty look when she first saw him just before he told her to befriend the young kidnapped victim in the series finale

reply

your spoiler material speaks of an episode that hasn't been shown yet in the U.S.
