PBS Masterpiece question.

How come Alan Cumming intros Masterpiece Mystery while Laura Linney was cut from Masterpiece Theatre (only later to serve as a voice-over)?

reply

They both seem to switch back and forth.

The intro has been going on for decades, I loved it as child. It's just what they do almost like... Thanks for tuning in now let's take you on an adventure.
You don't need to an intro in the UK because this is regular tv for you guys but for the states it was a treat to watch something that we wouldn't get on out regular channels.
Now we have so many ways to watch, stream, dl or even buy (if you have a region free dvd player) back in the day it was PBS special Masterpiece theater or nothing.
Just my thought. I love the intros.

This started way back in the early days of Masterpiece when Alastair Cook introduced each episode. He did it for years and it was his main claim to fame here in the states. In those days, quite a few series were based on works by writers not so well known over here and Cook would inform us about them. (E.F. Benson comes to mind.) I think originally he performed a real function, then it just became a comforting tradition to have someone introduce the series. When Masterpiece Mystery started, Diana Rigg did the honors.

Actually, the 1st host of "Mystery!" to give it it's first title was film critic Gene Shalit. Then, when he proved to be unacceptable, for whatever reason, Vincent Price stepped in as the host till he had to leave because of health issues, which is when Diana Rigg became the host. Then for a number of years there was no host, till Alan Cumming became the host in 2008.

1980-1981 Gene Shalit
1981-1989 Vincent Price
1989-2003 Diana Rigg
2004-2008 no host
2008- Alan Cumming
