Why didn't they just run down the zombies after they crashed out of the place?

Exactly! Lame excuse for more "drama" with Mother Hen and her stupid kids🙄

Maybe they're going to try to run the zombies down but then the engine won't turn over (I know it's an old fashioned plot device, but it works).

That trope, or there are too many dead and it weighs down the car.

They could try swerving to the left and the right and knocking them down.

This has happened before on both shows. The dead are squishy, if you drive into a large crowd of them they become like a thick slippery sludge that gets get slippery under your tires and stuck in your wheel wells. That basically gets you stuck in place.
