Dev Patel is too white!

Am I the only one who was bothered by this? The little Saroo had much darker skin complexion, and even the documentary moments at the end showed that real Saroo was darker, too. Patel's visual discrepancy almost ruined the film for me.
As far as I know Indian people don't get whiter as they grow up, do they?
(If only Naveen Andrews was younger, he would have been perfect for this role.)

(Apologies for me English, not my native tongue)

reply

Sure they do. Ever seen an Indian or even African person who lives in the USA, Canada, Europe etc., come back from their country of origin? They're like 10x darker.
Your body just adapts to the environment that you're in... if you don't need as much melanin, it won't waste time producing it, but for darker people that capability is still there if necessary.
On the other hand, evolution frowns upon pale-faces like myself and doesn't let us adapt one bit lol.
And sure Australia is hot, but it's not as close to the equator as India.

reply

As a Tasmanian, living in the same city a Saroo grew up in, I can assure you this part of Australia is not hot. Our climate is temperate marine.

reply

Ah well there we go, makes even more sense why he's paler. Learned something new, thanks! :)

reply

It's got nothing to do with weather. Not all Indians are the same colour, the same as not all white people are pasty white. Dev Patel just happens to have a lighter colour than the kid playing the character earlier in the film.

reply

Was not bothered by it but I did notice it

reply

I noticed it and was kind of bothered but it did not ruin the film for me. I thought the same thing, sun exposure was simply different in different countries and seasons.

reply

lol. Nothing to do with sun exposure. They are totally different gene pools. You do understand that people in India, the far majority of the time, marry (and reproduce) within their own group? Dev Patel is a totally different group, visible in his features overall, not just his skin shade!

reply

I noticed he looked different both from the real life Saroo and from the actor playing him as a child. Often an actor is chosen for his acting ability and his box office draw more than for his looks.

reply

Yes, of course.
Hence Ben Kingsley playing Gandhi, lol.
