Why was one Saroo so different from the other?

The young Saroo was spunky and ready for anything. The adult Saroo was brooding and the opposite of confident for finding his family.

I don't see how he could have been nominated for an Oscar, much less win one. I wouldn't have minded the young Saroo up for an award. He was adorable.
