Budget as high as $185 million??? Is Bombzilla another flop for Warner Bros this year? Uh-oh..

Damn. What's going on with Warner Bros this year. Lego movie 2 is a big flop, Shazam massively disappointed, Pokemon is flopping considering it's the biggest media franchise in the world and now it looks like another costly flop for Warner Bros this year. Unlike Disney, they don't have killer record breakers like the MCU films or various other Disney movies to stem the bleeding.

It's way, way, way down from the first Godzilla, it actually got crushed by Aladdin in overseas markets that weren't China or Japan, which is especially bad since China takes 75% of the revenue, so that isn't going to save it. Reviews and cinemascore aren't good plus there's so much competition every week after.

According to Deadline the budget is as high as $185m and not the supposed $170m. It's going to need at LEAST $540 million if it's only $170m and China doesn't plays that big a part in it's total. Where exactly is it going to finish worldwide?

reply

If you look at WB's 2019 calendar other than It2 they don't have any potential hit or huge earner, just some low budget drama/horrors. And It2 comes later this year. What are their plans for summer, am I missing something?

reply

They still have Joker as well but their entire winter schedule looks pretty weak. I'm not even sure they can hold onto 2nd place tbh. This was their last big film really until It2 so it's been pretty miserable for them this year unfortunately.

reply

It's funny how you ended your post with "unfortunately" to pretend that you feel bad for WB, you've made it quite clear that you don't give a flying fuck about WB, so why don't you just fuck off and stay on a Disney movie message board and be with your own kind Disney dick rider.

reply

Lady_Leopard...lol...too funny!

reply

On the contrary I quite LOVE Warner Bro movies and their diversity. I'm actually seeing Godzilla tomorrow and watching it ahead of the box office juggernaut Aladdin because I enjoy monster movies more. In my country it's getting crushed by Aladdin, so I'm doing my part since it needs all the help it can get.

reply

warning ,WB dick rider alert, this ones salty

reply

Yeah but Joker, even if it's a good movie, is rated R and not very well received among the CB fans. The trailer looked bad too, though in theory a CBM it's meant for a completely different audience, that will probably cover its budget and make a 100M profit at best. Taking into consideration WB's slate of 2019 that's a success, but so far they had one big flop (Lego2) and two breakevens/modest-profit-at-best (Shazam, Pikachu) looking at the titles that had bigger budget and were parts of a bigger franchise. Godzilla is shaping out to be a flop like the LegoMovie.

Did you just create a call-out thread to someone but just not mention this someone's name in the opening post?

What has this board morphed into?

Crap.

Crap.
On a pointed very directly applied summary to this single situation I'd agree with you.

But you could have defied the slide by doing the opposite you know?

reply

in order to morph into crap, it would have had to have been not crap to begin with. but its always been that since conception.

reply

And yet here you are.

What does that say?

While I absolutely love this Thread and feel Its a perfect example of Queens trolling coming back to bite him

I must say, This is actually kind gone past making fun of Queen now....

were really heading toward FLOP territory now...

at first, I was just gonna make fun of Queen for defending this films Low box office...but figured the film might creep toward breaking even....

But Now...I see almost no way this can NOT be a HUGE FLOP

of course Godzilla 2 is really under performing domestically...but whats more scary is its overseas under performance...

reports are coming in of only hitting 130 M overseas...

again what truly scary about this is Godzilla 2 is opening Nearly Double what Godzilla 1 opened to in China....which means Godzilla 2 must be DEAD on arrival in most other overseas markets

Godzilla 1 opened to 140 M overseas and thats with a Small Opening in China

Godzilla 2 is opening LESS than Godzilla 1 even with the HUGE Bump from China

as you said The Budget is HUGE as high as 185 M and Its marketing is 100 to 150 Million...

Thats about a break even point at around 600 M....

and honestly at this point, Its seems extremely likely Godzilla 2 wont even hit 500 Million or even match Godzilla 1s gross in anyway

Godzilla is heading for a Huge drop domestically from Godzilla 2....Its going to make less overseas and Now seems to be heading for a total gross Less than Godzilla 2 as well...

WBs Probably looking at a 50 to 100 Million dollar Loss on Godzilla 2.

complete disaster

The question is why is this on the doorstep to Flop City?

There is something about this Godzilla film series that is starting to appear very similar to the whole DCEU Justice League fiasco in one aspect. No one cares about the other Titans or monsters.

What is wrong with the assumed marketing for this studio vanity project?

Marketing can try and figure out and measure what fans want.
Marketing can make fans aware of a product.
Marketing/Advertising can try and create momentum for a product.

I'm an OG watcher of Monster movies via "Creature Features". Maybe, just maybe a single film with Rodan, a film with Mothra, a film with King Ghiddorah would have established some kind of demand for them and then a team up movie? Hell a film with Gamera vs Godzilla would have generated more interest even without a new solo film with Gamera!

Shin Godzilla did absolutely nothing in the USA and it appears that this whole endeavor is banking on a King Kong vs Godzilla teamup or face off with no one seeing how they can pull this off with the studios over powering Godzilla to the point of God-Hood. And I mean BOTH with Big "G"'s too.

The stupid side is QueenFanUSA trumpeting that this movie is coming in HOT or is the next BIG summer thing or hit. Based on what?? Guts! I'm ready to think that QueenFanUSA is the jinx that is ruining WB and Universal. If QueenFanUSA is pushing a film it is DOOMED. DOOMED I say!

Of course this is all premature to call this a flop as kids and males have yet to find this film in theaters so let's just wait for a week and 2nd weekend.

Fair enough?

Lol

Queen Ironically May be WBs worst enemy

Queens claims Of WB films being RED HOT have damn near went down in flames on near 100% basis

I remember Queens Guarantees that Justice League was going to be RED HOT coming off Wonder Woman...where he later Guaranteed a Opening weekend over 150 M+....that Changed to 133 M+ then to 115 M+ then to 100 M and finally after JL was revealed to come in Below 100 M...Queen then guaranteed a Great 2nd Weekend and Great Long Term prospects due to it being a "crowd Pleaser"...lol those long term prospects ended up being a LOSS of 60 Million +

I remember when Queen claimed Tomb Raider was coming in RED HOT after he prematurely misunderstood its Midnight numbers and thought it was going to open huge....Tomb Raider of course opened Soft and then he made the exact same "Long Term Prospects are Great for Tomb Raider because it was a Crowd Pleaser" thread...lol those long term prospects ended up being a 60 Million domestic Total

Then Theres Shazam..."Brace for Impact"...lol Queen Guaranteed Shazam was coming in RED HOT after Aquaman, In fact his exact prediction was "HOTTER" than Aquaman....Queen went on to guarantee a 75 Million + opening Weekend and then added A near 100 Million OW was more likely....Queen Guaranteed Shazam would make at least 250 M + domestically and would Beat BOTH AM1 and AM2 world Wide, Meaning Queen guaranteed at least 625 Million WW for Shazam...Instead Shazam was Dead on Arrival and got completely Devoured by Captain Marvel and Endgame resulting in Shazam at absolute BEST Breaking even which has now basically killed any talks of a sequel....1 and done....man Shazam sure did come in RED HOT huh?

now theres Godzilla.....

More Expensive than Godzilla 1 and is gonna make Less than Godzilla 1 in every way, A Sequel thats gonna make nearly 50 % less than its predecessor on OW....Gonna make around 70 Million less domestically and Is now certainly going to make less Wold wide...resulting in a 50 to 100 Million dollar loss for WB....lol Yet somehow Queen tried to spin this as good....

bottom line you are correct...Queen is the kiss of death for WB...

as to your points about WHY Godzilla 2 is flopping...

for me it comes down to 3 things

1. Its clear WB doesnt understand how to run, create or envision a cinematic universe of any kind....

2. for me, Godzilla 2s Marketing campaign truly was one of the worst marketing campaigns I've ever seen that absolutely gave way every possible exciting thing about the movie and Literally left NOTHING for audiences to be excited about or to be revealed in the actual theater...

and 3. again I believe Godzilla 2 may have been Doomed from the start the way Justice League was DOOMED after BvS.

BvS was just awful, so hated and so wrong, there was no going forward, there was no righting the ship....Audiences were OUT...

I believe the same may hold true for Godzilla 1....I was on the IMDB boards when it came out....Audiences Hated that movie and truly felt insulted....It wasnt just bad , It was Infuriating the way The built to action sequence and then cut away and never showed them, The Lack Of Godzilla and The awful darkness of the climax to where you could barely tell what was going on was Infuriating...

With box office results this low...I honestly think Godzilla 1 truly may have just Burnt the bridge and there was no going forward, Godzilla 2 may have been doomed from the start...audiences may have just been OUT...

The year isn't over yet and your QueenFanUSA year-end summary and greatest hits will be pages long!

This was one of your best recaps of the failures of QFU!

It's a shame that it's doing so poorly. It's a very well-made movie, for what it is. It's pretty much the exact movie Godzilla fans have wanted all their lives. I think the real problem is that there simply aren't that many Godzilla fans. Someone who grew up in the '60s and '70s probably has fond memories of watching the campy films with the guys in the rubber suits stomping fake-looking cities. Someone born in 1980 or later probably doesn't. A fair number of those older viewers grew up and lost interest in giant monster movies. End result: the vast majority of film-goers just don't care about Godzilla.

reply

billbrown...do a little research for once.

WB is only on the hook for 25% of this. Legendary Pictures will take the rest.

reply

Poor Queen....

Still dont realize that Still A LOSS for WB....

whats 25% of A 100 Million LOSS........lol oh ya 25 Million in LOSSES for WB...

Also Congrats, You've now forfeited the right to Brag about any Future WB movie thats HIT that Involved Legendary....

you need to think before trolling....in desperation your now trying to claim "so what if Godzilla is a FLOP, Most of the Loss will be for Legendary"....well congrats, Now If Godzilla Vs Kong is a Huge hit....I'll be there to OWN YOU with your own trolling and say "So what If Its a Big hit, Legendary is the one making all the profit"

I truly dont even have to think Of ways to Obliterate you....all I have to do is wait for you to own yourself, Whenever you get desperate you come up with these Absurd excuses to try and weasel out of a LOSS and all I have to do is then just apply whatever excuse you came up with to FUTURE films you like.....You own desperate Logic and excuses is your ultimate Undoing....Instead of Just accepting defeat, You make it worse by making excuses that I can then Spin on you and turn 1 LOSS into Multiple future LOSSES for you

but serious Excellent call on Godzilla 2 Coming in WAY over 50 Million....

The Ghost of Shazam is coming back to Haunt you

remember when in The span of a weekend you went from "Near 100 M"....to "At Least 75 Million" ...to "Its still coming in Over 50 M"

Shazam of course Missed all Your Guaranteed by Hundreds of Millions and Like with Captain Marvel your now forced to HIDE and avoid that board like a plague....

In seems Your destiny is now the same for Godzilla 2....right now your doing the rounds to try and save face and NOT admit defeat...but You now know Godzilla 2 is a Flop....I Bet my next weekend You touch this board with a 10 foot pole and It will be added to Your List of Boards you must avoid because You cant face your failures...

PS....

serious question

you do realize by turning into a ghost and HIDING....It doesnt actually Make Your Fails go away right?

People are still Brutally making fun of you and laughing at you on The CM and Shazam boards and when you eventually RUN and HIDE from this board in a few days, Its not going to stop everyone from continuing to laugh at you and Mock your failures....

lol I know You dont want to face your embarrassing failures on any of these boards....But by Running and Hiding, Its not actually making them go away....We are all still Enjoying Your Misery and complete Failure...

BillBrown you do realize that QueenFanUSA's M.O. is to just move on to the next Disney/Marvel movie and proclaim, "The End Is Near"?

So let's see that would be Spiderman:Far from Home won't make a Billion Dollars.
Toy Story 4 is a dead franchise and cost too much.

The Lion King won't break even
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil , wash, rinse, repeat.

Frozen 2 won't make as much as Frozen 1.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, oh my goodness maybe "Cats sleeping with dogs"?

The trailers are all depressing and/or scary. It's like they're trying to market a Horror movie

The very first shot in the very first trailer should have been of Godzilla in broad daylight, IMO. Godzilla has been a pop culture icon for so many decades, there is no reason to cloak him in stormy skies and moonlight. We all know he's a giant fucking lizard.

He's basically a superhero. Every good superhero movie trailer gives you a good idea of the hero's origin, motivations, and physical appearance. They also tease the villain and make them look invincible

The trailers for this movie don't make Godzilla look heroic. They don't explain how dangerous and overpowered King Ghidorah is. They don't make you AT ALL invested in the characters or the story. Nobody gives a shit about Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, or Vera Farmiga, sorry. Godzilla should've occupied most of the screentime in the trailers, and they should've showcased his "personality"

reply

I think it will depend on whether this movie has legs or not. Foreign receipts will be important but so will people domestically going to see the movie more than once. If those factors work then G:KOTM could turn a small profit. WB needs to get their financial house in order though. $170m for a CGI fest (granted the CGI monsters are gorgeous when we're allowed to see them)?
