Empire gave it ONE STAR!!!

Good. It's shit: no good human characters, bad CGI, lame premise done better in Japanese originals + satire, the latter of which this does not have.

reply

Wow and ppl thought the last one was lame!... is it worse than GZ98?

reply

I haven't seen this new one, but it's shit, I know that.

reply

Informative.

reply

Did you get that from your crystal ball?

reply

I’m still seeing it. 56% on rotten tomatoes so it’s still mixed reviews at the moment.

Empire gave Overlord three stars and that was one of the worst movies I saw at the cinema last year and they gave The Last Jedi 4 stars the year before so I don’t think I entirely trust their reviews anymore.

reply

their review pattern hasn't really made any sense for the past 10 years or so.. maybe 20 years..

look at some of the movies that got 4 stars - Suicide Sq, Spectre/Quantum (same as Casino Royale and SkyFall!),ID:R, Star Trek Beyond, Thor Dark World, CowboysAliens, Terminator 4, Robin Hood, Pearl Harbour, Phantom Menace (Clones got 5!) plus Superman Returns and Jacksons Kong got 5 stars!

and Taken (the original) got One star!!

reply

Exactly, some very questionable review scores from them over the years.

From the other reviews I’ve read it’s either the Godzilla movie we’ve been waiting for or it’s awful. Definitely one of those ‘see for yourself’ Kind of movies.

reply

I actually joined the Empire online forum because of Taken!

I was that incensed by Dan Jollins review, saying that the movie was full of racist bile, it seems you can't have bad guys unless they are white and English or American these days.

Absolutely piss poor review, seeing things that just was not there.

reply

I couldn't believe it when I saw Taken on dvd and it was a fukin awesome action thriller (and Fun!) as had expected it to be STdvd bad based on the empire review (think remember it getting some serious buzz in the US at a much latter date than UK and that's what led me to check it out on dvd). apparently the entire world thought so too and as we know it gave Neeson a new career as an action man (ok hed done action before but not like what happened after Taken).

its the most WRONG Empire has ever got it (including Clones)

reply

I bet most of those were paid reviews. Suicide Squad for sure

reply

So did uproxx and the telegraph. Metascore 47.

reply

...and it will have little effect on this film's box office. General audiences don't seem to pay attention to and/or trust critics anymore.

reply

As Aladdin demonstrated.

reply

I dont know if this is good or bad....

It seems the biggest complaints are There is too much action and CGI and not a good story....

But I must say that actually sounds like an improvement from The 2014 Godzilla which was Infuriatingly Light on Action and actually Scenes/footage of Godzilla.

I'm not entirely sure what more you could want out of this film...its a sequel to a film that was basically torn to shreds for Not having enough action and Its A film that Features Multiple Massive CGI creatures....I think pretty everyone who is going to see this film is Going in not Expecting some Great, Meaningful Story...I think The audience for this film is going in hoping for Awesome Action and fight sequences.

I havent seen the film, But I must admit, with this particular movie not only I am ok, But I would be happy If it was Similar to Transformers 1,2 or 3.....where There wasnt much of a story, But The Action and Fight Sequences were amazing and Fun...

I'm not claiming that would make Godzilla 2 a Great movie....Just fun and thats really all I would expect from A movie with Multiple Giant CGI creatures...

reply

sounds a similar scenario to Incredible Hulk and Man of Steel coming after the complaints of Hulk/Superman Returns being too action lite/too much character - which were then criticised for having too much action/not enough character

one star is fuking crazy tho . I cant even remember last time they gave a film one star other than the ridiculous Taken review. most stuff that's average or bad they give *** or its it really bad **. sounds like maybe Empire has abit of a vendetta against this movie. maybe they wernt granted enough access to the production or freebies etc? or maybe they no like the director (who used to work alot with Bryan Singer who is a big no no now) or maybe they no like some of the stars in it? (maybe someone had a bad interview with the Stranger Things/carriefisher type girl?) or maybe the film has abit of a political agenda they don't agree with? (Empire is very lefty now)

funny thing tho - it getting * star has actually made me curious that might go check it out! just to see how bad its supposed to be. which I totally wouldn't consider seeing it had it got the bog standard 3 star review (maybe if it had gotten 5 stars id consider going too).. I didn't bother with GZ'2014 (just on dvd)..and had no interest in this before that review

doubt it will impact the box office much - Venom (**) and something else last year got trashed and did crazy BO

reply

You're spot on about the political agenda point! The reviewer spent a fair bit of page space attacking the film for portraying an environmentalist character as a villian. I suspect this reviewer hated Kingsman: The Secret Service too.

reply

Sounds like that reviewer has seen too many basic action movies with evil boogeymen villains.

The reviewer has forgotten that the best villains believe they are doing the right thing, and often are pursuing a noble goal, they just got impatient and started forcing the goal.

Thanos is an environmentalist villain too, I wonder if this reviewer noticed. Might be tricky to equate since Thanos operates on a level of universal resources.

I just saw it and unfortunately the Empire review is pretty much spot on. It really is that bad and makes the 2014 film and Kong: Skull Island look masterful by comparison.

The script is truly dire, like Independence Day 2 levels of bad. The final fight was mostly good but by that point you don’t care and it also keeps cutting away to the human drama that has become laughably bad by this point.

Such an overstuffed mess of a movie that really only needed a few human characters to truly let the monsters have their moment.
