In reality according to Indian testimony Custer was one of the first to fall secondly according to Major Reno's testimony he head examined Custer's remains and noted for one and in this TV show Custer says dry your Sabres but he distinctly ordered his men not to carry their sabers when they left Fort Lincoln

Custer was on last stand hill. He was not one of the first to fall.

In the film 'They Died With Their Boots On', Errol Flynn's Custer also was the last to die. It's just how Hollywood does things with the lead character.
