Stopped watching after 15 minutes

When the narrator said there was 500 million sq mi. open for settlement in the West. The entire US is only 3.8 million sq mi. Watch the Ken Burns series if you want actual history and not inaccurate entertainment.

reply

there are couple of things like that i noticed in first ep as well. Gonna check out series you mentioned.

reply

Yea the whole episode had this sensationalist feel to it. Like that History Channel miniseries The World Wars which pissed me off so bad because it was so inaccurate. Is it so hard to keep simple facts straight?

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

I like American west history shows but this one has so many mistakes its like it was made by a high school AV department. One glaring mistake that sticks out like a sore thumb is when they show Pinkerton getting a letter that his main detective was murdered and it shows the letter having being addressed with an abbreviated two letter state and zip code. This style wasnt used until the early 1960s about 100 years after the events that were being depicted in this tv show.

I don't mean to defend this program as I haven't yet seen it. But I have watched the first minute or so, and clearly heard the narrator say that 430 million acres would be settled. I'm still totally with you on the Ken Burns angle.

reply

430 million ACRES, not square miles. Get your facts straight. And remember that included all of North America.

reply

YES .. Acres not miles...

reply

NOPE, 500 million SQUARE MILES...just watched & listened for it. I'll keep watching but Ken Burns' docs are the best & most accurate, historically. O'Reilly's 'Legends & Lies' is worth watching. I'd prefer the PhDs contribute, not SAG actors though. And no one narrated a doc better than the late, great Edward Herrmann! But show seems ok so far... I believe this website more than thie program as well: http://www.aboutbillythekid.com/fact_vs_myth.htm

haven't seen this show but i think he said acres, not miles.
