Great movie!

Drove across town to the only theater showing Freetown (Barton Creek). Never saw a trailer being aired prior to. But I knew it was worth seeing what I had heard of. It was just hubby and I, and an African couple in the whole AMC theater. Would it have made a difference if the main actor was a famed actor? Or white? ?. Bet so! But this is a story of Africa. No need to have mcD and chick fil a toys to advertise it. No need for frequent trailer ads for it. It doesn't ooze fantasy, sex, and un-realism.... Instead it reeks of truth and pain and faith in God. So no, it ain't a big hit in the boxes. That's another world, different from typical America. But I am from Africa, I am of Africa. I am Africa. I cannot afford to be diminished by the society I dwell in, lest I forget my roots. So go see the movie. You will not regret it. Whoa! End of blog! Lol!

This movie made me think about a few things again that are important. One is that the next time I see mormons preaching the word of God I will smile and say hi to them. They are trying to do some good in this world when the rest of it is trying to continue to do so much wrong. The second thing that is important is to remember we have not rid the world of hate and ethnic cleansing. We need people all around the world to put people in power/government who are interested in stopping this sort of thing. Now with this all said was this a great movie as you put it? Well I can at least say if it gets people thinking of how the world needs to change and maybe gets people take a stand and take action then yeah maybe it can be said to be great. I think though in order for this film to be great it needs to be released on DVD and Blu-ray with many extras showing what happened in this war. It needs to show the gruesome reality of the past so it is not repeated in the future. It would be nice to be educated more about what happened.

I can guess your personality, the victim, the pessimist. Instead of focusing on your people's accomplishments you dwell on the negative and expect somebody to put a crown on your head for being born just like the old white kings. You should be thankful you are out of that "wonderful" place called Africa and in a much better place. Where? I don't know, but you are on a computer, and not in Africa. So pick pretty much anywhere on the globe and you are more fortunate.

I don't recall seeing any trailer ads or "mcD and chick fil a toys" advertising any movie aside from a child's film years ago. Shrek and Minions sure get a lot of advertising but it's an entirely different demographic and marketplace if you can understand that. You sometimes see market placement --most notably in "I, Robot", that is a defining film for failed brand injection within a movie-- but it's pretty subtle nowadays or they get a lot of criticism.

Would it had made a difference if the main character was famed? Yes, certain stars have box-office draws, but a famed actor would not act in this crap, there's a reason they made it to the "A" list, and it's not for making decisions like that. If he was white? That wouldn't make much sense for this movie now would it? That's like making McCain a black character in "Game Change".

Hotel Rwanda was about Africa just as much as this and it was good, District 9 south Africa, nice sci-fi action (😃), What about Slumdog Millionaire? No whites, so it must have failed right? Wait, didn't it win some big award? What about City of God, one of the best movies made, not a single white character I can recall. I don't think they are doing very well today though, after I read a 10 year follow-up documentary of the characters since then in 2012. Guess they all got lucky including the director. Some of the actors are popular now though, but only a handful, and one is a big star.

Mellow - your post belies your username.
I think you are being far too harsh on the previous poster.
I agree it was no Hotel Rwanda, or District 9, or Slumdog - each of them were very good films.
I do think it was an engaging film of an interesting and overlooked historical event from a unique perspective.
I don't see it having broad appeal, but I do think it was quite well done for a low-budget, faith promoting movie.
At least I enjoyed it.

Yes, perhaps I have split personality. May I offer my sincerest apology. I must switch my username to Sometimes_Melow... Or perhaps add an asterisk if that's possible, and throw it down on my signature like "* = Sometimes not so mellow."
