Cute, but I can't see this lasting

I'm a fan of anything different on TV (aka, non police procedural/talent show/lame sitcom) but its been proven in the past that variety shows don't work in America anymore.

That trend died out in the 80s. Even regular sketch comedy shows can't really hang around long.

I like Maya Rudolph but I can't see this working. She'd have been better off trying a sitcom or something starring herself. It would stand a better chance.

They tried making her the star of Up All Night (even though she was supposed to be a supporting cast member), and as soon as they did that show got canceled.
Lorne Michaels is determined to force her on America, no matter what.
I actually think she could be good in certain roles, but trying to make her into some kind of mega-celebrity doesn't work. It didn't work on SNL either.

I agree.

With the advent of late night sketch comedy shows(such as SNL) and talk shows that provided much hipper, non-bland humor, variety TV show comedy became passe decades ago. And somehow I don't think Maya Rudolph is going to revive the genre. The truth is that she just doesn't have a strong enough personality nor the spontaneous wit--like Carol Burnett for instance--to carry a show like this, and her support cast is too vapid and mundane.

I think you're right. NBC or some other network should consider giving her her own TV sitcom. I think this would be a better vehicle for her.

ratings were pretty good and won the 10 pm slot. i say she has a chance, although it'll be difficult as the voice was the lead in yesterday and it ends this week.

Of course the first episode did well.

NBC promoted the hell out of it, which is shocking (for them). And last week's SNL featured heavily, if I recall. And they promised a ton of celebrity guests (well, we got Kristen Bell and Craig Robinson... so....)

Where it lands next week and the week after, we shall see.

I haven't seen many promotions for it, also not every first episode of every show is a success.

If you haven't seen many promotions for this show, you must not watch a lot of TV (which may be a good thing). They ran a lot a commercials to advertise it, and Maya appeared on "Ellen" to promote the show last week. The ratings may have been strong for the debut episode, but if the show doesn't significantly improve the ratings will plummet, I assure you.
