Drilling the safe....

It was not really done properly IMO>

lets imagine it is a concrete safe, with a steel liner, inside and out.

the first section you would use and oxy cut off a area of plate.

The second stage would be the diamond core drill, which are cheap, and will cut through that concrete, and with that thickness (8" ??) you would not use it dry, but wet with water.
If it hits steel reinforcment it will slow it down.... but as long as it is only a small amount it will cut through, if they had plans, it is possible they could avoid steel reinforcment.

And you would not use that drill with the Diamond bit, you would use a smaller hand held.

Belts on those drill presses dont really break, well i cant see it happeing ever.
and surely that apartment had power? why 2 generators?

The final stage would probably be hardened safe steel on the internal side of the safe, a HSS could work, a cobalt would be better, but a HSS core dril bit would be best i think.. So your not drilling a large area, more just make a key hole, maybe even off a magnetic drill press.

Im not sure why he would have to go to germany for any of that stuff, nothing you could not find at a good engineers supplier in LV i imagine.

It was at that point for me the movie started to lose me.. it really could have been alot better.

Good points, well made. For me it fell apart when I realised the hole was simply to accommodate an endoscope (which would only need a 1/4" hole) - oh, and that there was a completely exposed lock mechanism that could be seen with said endoscope. Then the whole scribbling numbers on the safe door thing - three numbers that were then forgotten five minutes later.

I could go on, but that would be churlish - it was a fun romp, and the sort of film that doesn't get made enough these days...

They bought the stuff in Germany, or at least I would presume, because they know that a drill like that would be the first lead that any investigators would start with, so didn't want to get it locally.

They were using liquid to keep the drill cool. If you watch the scene closely you will see someone holding a bottle with a coolant hose attached to it. And seeing how they had the know how to obtain the drill, I'm assuming they had coolant in it rather than water.

I've seldom seen std. reinforcement in concrete placed with better than +-3" accuracy, so plans would have been of little value.
Why imagine steel liners if not included in plot? Inner and outer steel is ludicrous.
Generators are to provide 240 power, not available in motel room.
Germany for security.
