What people who watched this movie missed so far...

Jim (Nicolas Cage) is probably still alive and planned this brilliantly. Jim knew that the safe was being watched over and that they would never leave alive or could flee. David (Elijah Wood) was tricked in to it and his suspicion toward the end was correct.

it's the perfect getaway, the girl can testify that Jim is dead and since no one is watching but going after David he can steal what he wants from the safe.

In the end when he seems to have been shot and lies in the kitchen I was expecting him to get up and scare David just like he did when he used the improvised explosive from the bullets to get to last inches of the safe. This scene was almost mirrored.

There are some hints :
-Jim father probably knew about the safe and told his son.
-Jim is standing in front of the great world largest gift shop when waiting for the gunseller (reference to the safe ?)
-David is checking his pulse with gloves on.
-Jim was wearing body armor
-Jim had enough bags and a cart, it is hinted that he knew exactly where he was going for.

David is a stoner, low life cop who is not to smart, this is obvious throughout the movie :
-stoner
-cleaning cat litter with a shirt
-Couldn't hold a relationship and sleeps with hookers
-JIm getting him to eat a lemon with tabasco
-Jim getting him to do al the surveillance
-Jim testing him with the russian roulettte routine, getting the 10k from the chinese

Jim is shown as an calculating, charismatic guy who knows what he is doing and is inventive and smart.
-the explanation of how to read a crime scene at the beginning
-going "undercover" in the casino
-using the homeless to take the pictures
-Find the german
-putting sun block on
-shooting the gun seller without blinking
-shooting the "guard" at the appartment and leaving the girl as the witness
-ready to kill a police officer who stumbled upon.

very very valid points.
he was way too smart however the bags and cart dont mean what you think. they went in a room assuming it was full to the ceiling of money which is large and heavy instead they find diamonds which are a fraction of the size and weight so if he had few bags that would be an indication he knew not the other way round.

However...

If there's no second body and ANYTHING in that safe that's unaccounted far, NONE of that matters. They WILL eventually find him. And they WILL eventually kill him. Bahamas or otherwise. Clearly they have the resources (and the will) to make that happen. So even if everything you conjectured is absolutely 100% correct, and it was all part of a masterful plan, he's still eventually going to be toast.

Nonetheless, you do raise great points.

Elijah Wood took the airline tickets though...

I would like to think Nic Cage faked being dead after Elijah double crossed him and then he escaped with the loot. It's a shame there wasn't a final scene with Cage sitting on a beach somewhere.

reply

Jim didn't test him with Russian roulette, Ethan Suplee did.

I don't buy Jim isn't dead.

"The girl can testify Jim is dead." But there will be no body. Also we don't know that no one has gone straight to the safe as well as some to chase David and the girl. In fact it seems highly likely to me that a team would be dispatched to check / guard the safe straight away.

There are too many variables for Jim to plan this with any certainty and it is already morning by the time David and the girl leave.

reply

I agree. It's a pretty convoluted plan where he expects David to decide he doesn't want millions of dollars, to try and shoot him but miss, fail to take his pulse correctly and not to shoot him again just to make sure.

reply

That's what I was thinking, I would've shot him as soon as I seen him laying on the floor WITH HIS HAND ON HIS GUN CONVENIENTLY ON HIS CHEST. I was fully expecting him to shoot him when he checked his pulse.

reply

One thing I noticed at the end, now that you mention this stuff....only one badge being put into evidence. Hmm. Ending could certainly be ambiguous.

reply

Well, do you think, the owners of the safe reported the break-in? Or the two murders? No way in hell, they will ever find the bodies.

reply

They're both dead and that safe was way too easy to crack. They had motion lights with no cameras or motion alarm sensors? I don't think so. Nobody was getting away with that much stuff and Elijah Woods character knew it. As for the one badge at the end. There was more than one evidence bag in that box we just don't see the contents.

reply

I would of thought they would of cleaned the scene, so nic cages badge wouldnt come into it. i reckon the girls phone call to her sons father was her way of telling the owners of the safe it was compromised.

reply

Your theory sucks, nic cage has no pulse = dead, wood never disarmed him because he knew he was dead. If there was a pulse he would have disarmed and possibly put another slug in him.

reply

Cage wouldn't have known that Wood would return all the diamonds to the vault, so there's every possibility he couldn't get at the loot again (he forced Wood to reopen the door the first time, but we don't know that Cage had the combination). So I'm sorry, but whilst I'd love your theory to be true it unfortunately doesn't hold water.

Gloves on or not, Waters was sure his partner is dead. He's a cop ffs, he knows how to check.

And even putting aside the fact Stone is dead, for all that convoluted fan fiction to work we need a tremendous amount of incredibly lucky streak of coincidence - no one can/will plan like that.
