This is the response to Godzilla 2014's backlash

"omg too many humans"
ok lets have an entire island of beasties, wiping out a small band of human fighters one by one.

"omg not enough main monster"
ok kong will show up in the first 15 minutes, and be essentially the main character

"omg not enough monster fights'
ok kong will fight several monsters in a brutal war for supremacy

and i also think its kinda responding to JW. since people were annoyed by the kids in JW, and the focus on a light hearted tone.
well going by most tv spots, this is quite a dark and violent movie, with creepy ass monsters all vying to murder each other, and the adult humans caught in the middle.

I'd certainly agree that the screen time (and fight scenes) given to Kong himself is a direct response to Godzilla's biggest and most often-voiced problem (the constant cutting away from every fight and Godzilla himself).

While Skull Island isn't a great movie, IMO, it's a lot better and more entertaining than Godzilla 2014.

It very well may be. I was so disappointed in Godzilla's five minutes of screen time. The movie was not about the monster whatsoever. Kong was great, he was basically the star and there was still a human element/plot. Hopefully the makers of Godzilla 2 realized that it can be done this way and be successful.

I hate that both films centered on monsters other than the stars. The spider things in Godzilla 2014 and the lizard thing in this one. Those are flat generic monsters whose only purpose is to convert the star monster into a protagonist heroic figure.

I liked the 2014 Godzilla but I enjoyed Skull Island way more.
