Her Mother

Is it me or is her mother just horrible!?

It's usually not a good sign when your mother drinks wine and smokes cigarettes before breakfast.

I think she had her good and bad points but at least she was honest about her shortcomings. I thought it was kind of funny how she had a glass of wine in every single shot no matter what time of the day!

True, but she didn't have to tell Eleanor that she never wanted to be a mother. It seemed cruel. She seemed bored by staying at home, and it was mentioned that she gave up her career to be a mother. She loved Eleanor nevertheless and encouraged her to return to France to finish her Ph.D.

Isabelle Huppert plays Eleanor's mother. She's one of France's best actors but isn't given a very big role here. I love all her French films.

Yes, saying that was harsh. She's been in so many movies, she was Eva in Amour, a favourite of mine.

Considerations of the character aside, Isabelle Huppert was excellently cast in this film. Every time I see her she's great.

As for the character, and specifically her saying in effect she had not wanted to be a mother, I viewed that as more something that helped her daughter understand her relationship with her father. It was jarring to be sure, but Eleanor was at an age and maturity I don't think hurt her feelings or self confidence. It also served to foreshadow the story her father told her about being in the ocean. The point is that chance and risk play a big part in life, which I think was the larger theme of the film. You still have to make your way even recognizing the importance of chance.
