Are they actors?

I may be an idiot, but I have to find out: Are the people Georgie and Poppy meet acting, or do they think they're in an actual documentary?

reply

They're actors! LoL! This is along the lines of the Ali G Show, Borat, etc.

reply

They're not asking if the brother and sister are actors; they're asking if the other people that these 2 meet are actors. Or, in terms that you just used - Ali G and Borat are characters played by an actor - are the people that they meet actors?

No, they're not. That's the funny part.

I know that's what's supposed to be funny, but they could achieve that with actors as well. I watched the second episode today, and I'm becoming more and more convinced that the americans are all ordinary people that are being duped. But I'm not sure.

Take your time. There wouldn't be a show without the 'ordinary people.'

Gamble and Hoggart are the only actors on the show—though it’s unclear whether the people they encounter are in on the joke or not. Part of this comes from not knowing whom exactly the show is skewering: Georgie and Poppy are presented as vacuous snobs, but they are most often thrown together with Americans intended as obvious comedic fodder. This includes a carefully preserved plastic surgeon with a stray wink (“he looked like a frozen cat”), the Worcester, Massachusetts, chapter of the tea party (who take Poppy’s “do you like Barack Obama?” bait as well as expected), and that great American icon, Fabio.

Personally, I definitely get the feeling that the Americans are non-professionals, but I also think they've been picked for their camera presence, and at least some of them know what's going on. So in that sense, you might say they are "actors", in the sense that I and all the others who played dead bodies in the movie Predator Island could have been called "actors".

Based only on my opinion, I get the feeling that some of them are actors and in on the joke, and some of them are not.

It could be that they know it's not real but are not given any lines and are asked to speak their mind. It's like Nathan For You. The guest 'characters' are usually the source of the humor of the show.
