The elephant in the room

The green screen, the background projections, the shifting angles, the 'fake' beard, the breaking of the fourth wall...

This film itself is an obedience test.

I thought it was:

1) Interesting and kinda cute - a bit like theater
2) Cheap - probably they had a very low budget. Could have been done as a student film
3) Reminded me of old movies from the 50s
4) Allows the viewer to see the grim subject matter from a bit of distance
5) Symbolic relevance - we are actors on a stage instead of ourselfs sometimes
6) Enables more blatant symbolism in the movie (e.g. elephant in the room)

Not sure how it was an obedience test. The breaking the fourth wall etc seemed more to show what was on Milgram's mind, his psychological state. The screen screen/artificial environments, elephant walking in the background, were all obviously disconnected from reality and not what was what actually happened... He is narrating things not from an impartial perspective, but from how he viewed the past.

His version of history seemed flawed anyway, coz even he doctored his own results and findings by putting an 'unscientific' influence to reach the conclusions he wanted. Anyone noticed how he was sweetening up the women with the cups of tea, in order for them to feel better about being lied to about the true nature of the test?

Yes. And also a play on the dichotomy of illusion and deception.

Please correct my grammar, make my day.

I refuse to buy Coke, I will not obey their subliminal messages put in this film.

Games within games. plays within plays.

An agentic response, perhaps? When watching a docudrama about a very important but controversial psychological experiment, we feel compelled to keep watching the film even after it becomes surreal. Simply because we believe it's important to understand the experiment.

reply

The surreal elements didn't work for me. I didn't feel compelled to watch the film any more because of these tricks.

By the end, I wondered what the point of the whole film was ... wasn't especially educational, the experiment didn't seem like a genius or a groundbreaker, just some guy whose work made it into pop culture ... and ... ? ... and NOTHING.

Well, this wasn't a documentary nor was this a formulaic, Hollywood biopic. Its aim was not to be educational or to explore Milgram's personal life, but for me, exploring themes of illusions, experiments, and ethics. So much of this film is so different from most films -- the structure, the calm, measured tone, subdued acting, the aesthetics -- that it really seems like this is a film for true cinephiles. If you go into this film expecting to watch a typical run-of-the-mill biopic then no wonder you were disappointed.

It's unfortunate you weren't able to enjoy it. I thought it was fantastic, and that Peter Sarsgaard did an excellent job.
