I thought they were gay friends or maybe male prostitutes.

I loved James Cordon's cameo.

The point seemed to me to be that Bennett wants to have sex them but not vice versa (particularly with Dominic Cooper and Russell Tovey's characters). I thought they were young guys acting in his plays who he'd invited back in the hope that one thing could lead to another, and it didn't. I didn't think male prostitutes would be fastidious enough to turn down a job offer like that, but I suppose it was NW1

That's exactly what I thought too. We didn't see any money changing hands and the "you don't want to stay a bit?" "Ummm no" exchange was telling.
I don't think he would have asked a prostitute if he wanted to stay over.

Later he says of sex "I have read about it too", leading to believe he doesn't practice a lot.

I assumed they were one night stands he had brought back to his flat.

I assumed they were actors, acquaintances. After all, this man is a successful playwright. He showed the first one his bedroom. Just because we didn't see if anything happened, doesn't mean nothing ever happened. Likely it did. But then if it happened on screen, it would hardly suit a number of people who might like to see a film about an old Catholic lady. Hardly relevant to her story.
