What did the husband do with the money from paintings/cards?

Other than buying paint and some brushes, sure didn't look like they were buying anything extra/new. Even the screen door looked homemade.

I just kept expecting that money to show up, either in cash, or something extra he'd buy her - but it never was a part of the story. He sure didn't seem to be spending it on anything.
