I think, she used her niece to do all the work around.
Also, she didn't want to be alone.

Indeed. That's the point of her character.

It demonstrates how a person with a selfish desire can do far more damage than a physical monster.

Symbolism of that sort, so subtly crafted, is sorely lacking in today's writing, which tends to lay things out bluntly with the assumption that all audiences possess an IQ no greater than the numerical value of their abdominal girth in inches!

Though... I suppose for some that might make them genius-level, now that I think about it.

I don't think it came to mind. (Spoiler:) Like in the end when Wirt says "that's dumb" to the soul being in the lantern. The older guy never thought about the beast's soul being in there instead of his daughter.
I'm sure she didn't think of it.
