I see people constantly wanting to talk about this in threads that are otherwise simply there for the sake pointing out this film's flaws, so I decided to make a thread where this issue was the relevant topic. For kicks, I'll be maintaining that Naruto and Sakura should have gotten together and welcome (civil) arguments to the contrary.
To start things off, I'll summarize my reasons for this point of view:
#1. NaruSaku actually results in giving Sakura meaningful character development.
#2. Naruto simply giving up on Sakura without any effort is out of character and contrary to the series' themes.
Nah. The series isn't about getting with a woman. Its about friendship, power and grief. Sakura would never give up her love for Sasuke. I don't give a shít about NaruSaku. Hinata wanted to be with him. There are more flaws in your statement, but I'll save that for another day.
I would start off by saying that I agree wholeheartedly that the series isn't about getting with a woman. Rather, I think we can agree that the goal of any author should simply be to tell a good story. And one of the ways in which one does this is through developing the characters in the narrative.
We look to Sakura, who has been the tritagonist since the beginning. We look to the role she's played in the protagonist's main goal (saving Sasuke) throughout the entire series. To not properly develop her character is a grievous mistake from the standpoint of writing a good narrative. My solution is to have her and Naruto get together in that it develops her character significantly while simultaneously being the end result of Naruto's main goal (saving Sasuke, i.e. keeping his promise to Sakura).
You say you don't give a *beep* about NaruSaku. Believe or not, neither do I. What I do give a *beep* about is good storytelling. Ditching your tritagonist and her entire subplot for reasons we don't know is not good storytelling.
It seems like you're only judging Kishimoto's writing based on the canon pairings rather than the actual flaws of the story.
Look, I get it, Naruto isn't a perfect manga, it never was. But rather than talk about pairings, do you want to know how I would've improved the manga, if I were Kishimoto?
- Give Team 8 and Team Gai each a story arc or fight scene in Part 2 (Team 10 got to have one, so why not them?)
- Give Tenten a backstory, because she needed one from the very beginning.
- Add more kunoichi interaction, and not just Ino and Sakura.
- End Sasuke's "vengeance" arc right after he learns the truth about Itachi, so we could focus more on other major characters.
- Add a little bit more Naruto/Hinata interaction between the end of the Pain arc and the start of the Fourth Shinobi War arc (because there needed to be, since Hinata's confession).
- Give a lot more backstory on the Uzumaki, Hyuga, Nara, and Yamanaka clan (we had too much on the Uchiha clan).
- Give Kurenai a backstory, since Kakashi, Gai and Asuma each got to have one.
- Have Neji and Hinata meet the Kumo ninjas who tried to kidnap Hinata a long time ago as a child, and fight them in Part 2.
- Put in more Hyuga family interactions, because there weren't enough in the manga at all.
- Have Kaguya appear much earlier in the manga, and not towards the end of it.
- Give EVERY kunoichi a chance to shine in Part 2 (especially Temari, Anko and Tenten).
THOSE are what Naruto fans should be complaining about, not the damn pairings!
Yes, I'm very well aware of that. I'm just saying ever since the manga ended, many people have been using the canon pairings as their ONLY excuse to call Kishimoto a bad writer (which I find to be very petty, because that meant that they were only reading his manga for the ships and nothing else).
