The Underworld hijack

Well, the whole series was supposed to be about Scott's character and him being half werewolf and half vampire which was supposed to be stronger than either, but Kate hijacked the series and made it all about her. I, personally, won't pay to see another of these movies. I loved the first one, but the rest are all trash.

In every movie after the first movie, Kate's character has to save Scott's character throughout the whole movie. It's just ridiculous. It's almost like he became half werewolf and half vampire to become weaker.

You can even see in the trailer it looks like she is half vampire and half werewolf later in the movie.

Your statement does not make sense.

Kate is the centre of the franchise. The first movie's opening scene was narrated by her.

As for your comment on the rest of the franchise, well, such a shame you don't enjoy them.

Yes. Leave and don't waste another penny or a nano-second of your life on another Underworld movie.

The franchise is for fans, not you.

i think what he's referring to is that the whole recurring thing is that of the coming of the hybrid the dawn of a new species, he was the last direct descendant of the father abraham etc, treated as either abomination or messiah, etc. in a commentary of the special edition dvd kate and len did say that she was not originally supposed to save the day until she went up to len and said otherwise. however, the writers also said that while michael was the main dud in the original draft, they changed it to be about selene before casting kate. thus it is partially true. i do understand and share the frustration, but you both are right, and i agree that if you are not wanting to watch these movies, why even post here?

Kate was the biggest name, but the focal point of the movie was Scott Speedman's character. Pay attention to the story instead of your own interests (Kate's Character/your avatar). Why do you think Scott quit the franchise? Because Kate is married to the director and the director wanted Kate as the main character/hero. The first movie CLEARLY depicts Scott's character as the center piece of the movie.

Truly, I will never spend another dime on watching anything from this franchise.

Kate wasn't that big a deal in 2003. "Underworld" made her more of a 'star' in the same way "Resident Evil" gave Milla Jovovich the extra exposure she needed to become a more recognised leading lady.

Michael being the key point of the movie's plot still doesn't make him the lead or the hero. Selene was effectively acting in the atypical hero role, with Michael as the 'damsel' until he finally changes near the end. Selene killed the big bad, Viktor. The vampires had more focus than the lycans.

Kate's character was the focal point from day one, though? I can understand if you were frustrated that Michael's powers/role within the story was underutilised, but Kate has always been the lead. She was on all the posters, appeared in the bulk of the trailer/promo footage, etc. They were always her movies, first and foremost.

frustrated is a nice way to put it, lol. to clarify, when i watched the commentary on both original and special dvd, you are correct. kevin grevioux said that michael was the hero of the original script. given the hype around the corvinus hybrid, that makes sense. however, len and kate said that originally selene did not save the day, implying that michael was to prove himself. Then she said she went up to him and said 'honey..' and the rest is history. kate was always the lead, but i had expected that perhaps michael would be more of an equal. sonja and lucian were both pretty well balanced in the prequel adn both were important. yet despite the long lost heir and messiah/next stage of evolution thing they pulled with michale and eve, i expected them all to be critical. kate's hot, don't get me wrong, but she should have been the hybrid descendant with the special blood from the very beginning if she was going to ham the spotlight. maybe that's what they're trying to do this time.

The problem is that Scott Speedman portrayed Michael horribly. Without the blue make-up he would have been by far the least memorable character in UW1. Viktor, Selene, Lucian, Raze, etc. were all awesome. Even Kraven and Erika were interesting; Kraven was badly acted, but entertaining. Michael was just poorly done, dull, and forgettable.

In the sequel, once again everyone was interesting and cool (especially Tanis, who I felt was underused) but Michael was the same dull, monotone blank slate that he was in the first one.

Michael was an interesting idea, but the execution of the character was horrible, and I don't think it was all Speedman's fault.

In a strange way, him being largely absent from Awakening made me want more of him, which makes me think Michael is better in small doses. He's super powerful in hybrid form, and if he actually learned how to fight like Selene does, he'd be unstoppable.

I won't deny that Scott Speedman should have portrayed Michael's character better, but I do believe he was made that way through the writing and directing. How they made the vampire/werewolf half breed should have been better done.

doubtful, but let's just hope that should eve return she'll have upgraded and evolved, or they get something new.

From what little I do understand, and I admit I know little, it was his decision not to immediately return. He had other gigs already lined up. He more or less made them have to write around his character. I liked Speedman and the Michael character, but few seemed to think he could really act.
