Would have been better if Speedman have just retutned?

I thought it woulda been a opportunity to made the franchise whole again. Ditto with what made Selene interesting in the first place, maening, her relationship with Michael. Riggs and Murtaugh only work together, not separately. Same here, mefinks.

Definitely. Underworld while supposedly in the horror/action genre made itself known for being a romance. Romeo and Juliet kinda, but not really.

reply

They should have spun off Speedman into his own Underworld-ish demon hunter franchise, but they were probably terrified his box office would stomp Kate's.

Satire?

Although Michael is as intersting as a broom I'll admit his importance to Selene's story. Got killed off screen in the worst possible way. I feel it's time the franchise gets the peirced through the heart and dies.

reply

It seems Speedman already left the franchise after Evolution.

I'm very very impressed by what they did with the character of Michael in Blood Wars. It was a bold move, and a great one as well. The plot was reasonable, yet totally unexpected.

Effective trolling is art.

reply

Yeah, it's like watching "the further adventures of Juliet" had she survived the play. Also why no one wantes the "Huntsman" sequel to Snow Whote & the Hintsman".

For someone who is supposedly the biggest UW fan there is you are terribly uninformed. Anyone who knows even a little bit beyond just the movies should know by now that Speedman/Michael was kicked from the franchise.

People who still say it was Speedman's choice might want to do a little online research.

I've never gotten a clear answer as to why he isn't in the current films. I don't believe it has anything to do with money, or at least it doesn't seem like it

They didn't want Michael's character in it, supposedly because there is no room in the story for him. I have my own suspicions as to the real reasons.

Hi Rjana:

I know I'm a little late to the party...but I've only just seen the movie this past Friday (March 10, 2017). I think the "real" reason "they" didn't want Scott Speeman in the movie is because the producer/director/writer aka Kate's husband; Len Wiseman didn't like the chemistry with Kate and Scott during the love scene in the movie "Underworld Evolution". Nevermind that in order for the scene to make it into the movie he had to to okay it (or so one would assume) since he's one of the people responsible for the movie being on the big screen. The character Micheal was the first of his kind; a hybrid, who was faster and stronger than the average werewolf. Yet going by the crappy scene in "Blood Wars" he's on the floor like a little bitch saying "I'm one of you" before he's strung up and killed like a sheep. Really!

I read the article and I'm not buying the Len and Scott friend business. The reason that Micheal wasn't in the movie because he would distract everyone from the mother/daughter storyline of Selene and Eve makes no sense. Micheal is/was Eve's father so why wouldn't he be and integral part of the storyline?

Len Wisemen obviously has issues... If he wasn't comfortable with the scene where his actress wife and his "friend" are doing a love scene then he shouldn't have written the scene in the first place. Or he could have done one of those fade to black love scenes where "we" the audience don't see anything, it's just implied that they made love. Instead, in my opinion because of someone's insecurities one of the unique pivotal characters is killed off in a completely ridiculous fashion!

My comments weren't particularly addressed to anyone. Just kind of irritated I missed Scott speaking on the franchise, and surmising why they didn't use him again. Who was your post for?

I was refering to RjanaR. I'm all thubs with the markup functions.

OK, sorry by bad.

While I admire your support of the Underworld movies, his death was cheap. It was meaningless. No one cared because we didn't see it happen.

They should have just recast him in a small scene with hybrid makeup on and killed him off live in front of Selene. It would have more of an impact since she has searched 2 films for him and just to lose him right away would be more devastating to her story arc and character.

reply

even though i love each of these UW films (part 3 is meh...) they without a doubt would have been better if Speedman/Michael had been in the past 2 films.

reply

I think awakening and blood wars could have been great opportunities to utilize michaels character.

reply

Either they thought Having Michael in the movie would make the fights seem one sided or they were really banking on a love story between Selene and David. Since David is played by a rising big name actor, while Scott Speedman has faded into obscurity. Still hoping For an Underworld 6 where Selene searches for Michael or since she's an elder now, maybe the story can be about Eve going to find him and at the end, brings Michael back to Selene.

reply

I can't imagine that it was because of a possible Selene/David ship. If that was their goal they did it all wrong. They shouldn't have had 'Michael' back at all and just used a few lines early in Awakening and tell us he is dead. And then have like 100 years pass between his death and the events in Awakening. From that point it's easy to get a new ship going. Plus one of the reasons Michael was written out is because the romance got in the way of whatever they wanted to do. Yes, they are untalented storytellers/writers who can't do complex plot.

The other reason is probably that they don't know to handle this kind of hybrid. Not just Michael. They are pulling the same stunts with Eve now that they did with his character. But both Michael and Eve are supposedly the biggest badasses in the verse. They should be kicking ass left and right way more than Selene. And that's a problem, since this franchise is all about her. No one can outshine her. It's one of the reasons Michael and Eve spend so much time as damsels needing to be rescued despite the fact that they shouldn't because they are tough enough.

Is it confirmed why Speedman stopped being in the frachese? Studio's decision? His decision? Fear of pigeonholing? Not enough money? Bad experience on either of the first flims? Personality disagreements with Beckinsale? Etc.?

I've heard where he just didn't want to be in them anymore. Yet the only role he can get is a very small part in an independent horror film called 'The Monster'

What are you talking about? He was just in the entire first season of "Animal Kingdom" on TNT too.

Child of the Eighties.
Man of the Nineties.
Man-Child of the Twenty-First Century.

I posted a link just a few posts above this one that explains it. If only one were to READ they would have seen it. I could also find the Scott Speedman interview where he said he was all ready to do Awakening and was then told he wouldn't be in it so he did something else.

And until I hear otherwise I assume the same thing is true for BW as it was in Awakening.

reply

Wow, even after all this time, I never knew Speedman spoke on the franchise at all. Going by that, I can only assume they didn't know what to do with his character, which seems odd. Possibilities seems endless to me.

reply

I'm of the opinion that a cardboard cut-out of Speedman could have done a better acting job than Theo James in these last two movies.

reply

Theo James really is not much of an actor. His presence, rather than Michael's absence probably makes me want to see the movie even less.

reply

Well, that’s good, because it’s also impossible to distinguish between Speedman and a cardboard cutout of Speedman. Oh, wait. There is. You don’t have to pay the cardboard a salary.

reply

probably a bad idea dredging up actors from a decade ago, most of them were very pale ladies and gentlemen whose skin ages really fast. Scott would be a fat wellined blob, not hot at all, by the time Underworld 6 came out. Speedman isn't actually immortal in real life you know. Its no coincidence that they need to change the cast a lot between each movie.

Had they cast a Keanu Reeves lookalike, or someone with slow ageing black skin then ageing wouldn't have been an issue, but you gotta be fast ageing pale people to play immortal vampires.

reply

rapadake that is a bunch of BS, white skin does not age any faster than anyone elses. I've see plenty of black and dark skinned people who look old as shit at a younger age. Can you provide any proof of what you said?
