A black comedy about a woman being raped and beaten

Disgusting. Paul Verhoeven hasn't changed after all these years. Mind you, Basic Instinct was great, with the woman in control. You could say Michèle is in control here too - if you were a very sick person.

Have you seen the movie?

reply

I won't make the post unless I had seen the movie.

reply

You may not like the movie, but don't insult those who think it's a good movie.

What are you? The Virtue League?

reply

Stopped reading after you said Basic Instinct was great. It was easily one of the corniest movies of all time. If might have been good if they played more into the comedy angle of it but they played it too serious unlike in Robocop.
Robo had the right amount of comedy and seriousness.

I lost interest when I found out she was the head of a video game company.

reply

Is it really comedy?

reply

Yes. A very black one though the rape aspects of the film is never treating light heartedly.

reply

thanks, i was surprised when i heard it is comedy bc of theme (rape) i tought it is heavy drama film

reply

It has it's dramatic elements as well. It goes back and forth between the comedy and drama without sometimes the drama turning acidly funny.

The actually rapes in the film are never treated in a light-hearted manner though there are a few comments made by other characters in the film that are in a comical vein. Also, Huppert's excuse for the marks on her face are very funny.

reply

I never laughed once watching this film. It's not a comedy to me.

reply

People use black comedy with lot of liberty how to define so. I won't consider this as black comedy but psychological drama which seems to take itself too lightly but only if you're missing the point.

reply

It's more drama than black comedy. There are moments of black comedy for sure, but it's a drama, a character study.

reply

I just watched this movie, and for real, there's no trace of comedy here, not even black comedy. Did we watch the same movie?

reply

Are you serious?

reply

I agree. The only kind of funny parts were those when she was confronting her mother.

reply

was thinking the same thing. maybe the OP saw a different version. or they don't understand the meaning of a black comedy,

you are correct. there is no trace of comedy in this movie, black or any other kind.

reply

I think it's because you have to understand french to see the black comedy in the script. I don't know how the translation or the subtitles were for english, but I doubt the comedic aspect translated that well. I watched the original french version (I am french) and the black comedy was definitely there, mostly in the actress' reactions, her acting, her lines, it was very subtle but occasionally pretty funny despite the heavy theme. It's all about how she treated the situation and people around her with such casualness despite the seriousness of it all. The interactions with her mom were very funny also. Some of it was very 'french humor' also so maybe not everyone can catch the small funny details in the movie dialogue.

reply

I don't understand French and I agree that it's a very black comedy.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

reply

I guess we don't have the same sense of humor. I've laughed the whole movie

reply

No comedy?

Did you see the Christmas dinner scene? The one where her mother announces shes gonna marry the toyboy?

That scene is funny from beginning to end. Not Dumb and Dumber funny but more like Coen brothers funny.

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

reply

Basic Instinct was indeed much better - especially visually. ELLE looks like a TV movie.

reply

I really don't see how it can be perceived as a comedy, if not in an unintentional way- as it can sometimes look like a parody of a badly written movie with illogical character development. But nothing from the performances to the soundtrack choices ever seemed to hint at a light approach.

reply

Unintentional? At least half of the movie has INTENDED funny bits, specially involving two characters: her son + her mother. What about the cat watching her being raped? It's pretty obvious is a tragicomical narrative (a women asks a doctor if her mother is pretending to be in a coma in this movie), her mother is with a much younger man, her son is dumb as f-, her father is a serial killer and she has an affair with the husband of her very best friend, it's crazy.

reply

You're demented.

reply

Those who don't have arguments... If finding the FACTS about this movie to be funny is demented, I am f- demented, don't care.

reply

I'm afraid I still don't see the humor in these situations; unless we are talking about about such an excessive overload of seemingly shocklingly situations only achieve utter ridiculousness.

What about the cat watching her being raped?

Verhoeven himself said that he intended the rape scenes to be taken seriously. But he apparently thinks there was comedy to be found elsewhere, so the film may feel like an unintentional comedy, but wasn't entirely intended as such, after all.

One joke or two don't make a film a comedy. Well, I guess there's only the Christmas setting for a good part of this ridiculous narrative, which may have aimed at an awkward effect, but still. The approach to the main storyline would like to be serious.

Exactly, it is ridiculous.

The rape wasn't funny, the cat reactions were. I said the movie has intended funny bits, I didn't say it's intended to be a comedy.

It depends, I guess you don't get what it is a BLACK COMEDY. Black comedy films often deals with very (very!) serious subjects but take comical turns, that's what make a film a black comedy, the dealing with serious stuff.

In a shake your head and snort with annoyance way, though. Not in a delightful one. You just get to laugh at how Verhoeven tries in vain to seem provocative when he actually isn't.

Or maybe a lot of people these days are prone to categorize as comedies movies that actually aren't? Many of the films that go as comedies at the Golden Globes actually aren't (there's always a bing studio involved though). Ironic events or jokes (or supposedly so) are to be found in plenty of films, but, as long as they don't constitute its core, comedy- black or not- can't be regarded as the main genre. Plenty of dramatic or action movies have at least one character that is designed at comic relief (at times in intrusive ways) and have full sequences that are meant to lighten the mood. But, when the general mood needs to be lightened at times, that means that, at the core, it's not a comedy.

Even heartbreaking films may have their bleakly funny moment. I love this exchange from "Amour", since we're discussing a film that shares a connection:

Anne: what would you say if people didn't come to your funeral?
Georges: probably nothing.

Maybe I should regard "Amour" as a comedy. That bit certainly amused me more than anything in "Elle".

reply

This movie has an ongoing comedic tone for me, I could give you some examples of it, but most of it was funny, it wasn't just comic relief. I guess you're making a moral judgment, since the movie deals with serious things that made you uncomfortable, you refuse to see its comical impress.

Why necessarily attach a label (comedy, drama, dramedy, etc.)? It's a movie. A piece of fiction.

Some like it, some don't. It's a matter of personal taste, and nobody deserves to be judged for this.
