ELLE IS A FLOP--let's admit it!!

This is the worse movie i've seen in 2016!!! It makes me think that the
theme of rape treated by a man is just not doable--unless he has
himself been raped!! NO RAPED WOMAN GOES TO DINNER AND ANNOUNCES matter-of-factly pass me the bottle of wine and by the way i just got raped. It often takes weeks, months, or years to recover. No woman in her right mind is going to put a sexy outfit and be in the mood for sex--it just does not understand the psychology and impact on the person. The person is broken and needs to gather her senses--she doesn't go to dinner with friends!! What kind of nonsense is that??
I came out of this movie upset, because i thought that is the line of conduct that is prescribed for the women to come??? (Below is the comment i made to the filmmaker's page in French) I rushed to see the movie as i have always loved Huppert Djian and i did love Basic Instinct that was smartly made.
Here it is made entertainment--it had nothing to do with Basic Instinct : that was a top movie.
ELLE is a flop--with a lot of money and bad taste backing it...
This 'coldness of being' is setting an example for the
youth; let's not forget it.
No one wants to make friends with the
rapist--even if it is to take a revenge. It just sounds off--the whole
movie!!!
What message for girls?? Is this the future that we reserve for women--to act like a man, to emulate him in his violence??)
Careful what you feed the youth: they might re-serve it to you someday..
In a nutshell-it pisses me off that we finance such garbage!!

It would be better if is wasn't made by the jerk who made showgirls.

No woman in her right mind

You realize Michele is possibly a sociapath right?

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

Louehp,

you don't understand the movie at all.

Please see it again.

Watch some Bunuel before.

And check what 'satire' means.

This movie is not a representative 'case study' about rape.

It's a very specific story about a very specific and complicated woman.

Yes to all of this. The OP is taking this at face value.

By definition, it is clearly not a flop - it has received considerable critical acclaim and Isabelle Huppert won a Golden Globe for it.

reply

woow critical acclaim! because they're always right!

this movie was a huge disappointment for me.. so cliche with the son killing the rapist at the end. come on. another shock value sexploitation, feel like there hasn't been a high profile one for a while so everyone thinks its fresh.

let's finish this the old navy way, first one to die LOSES! - Lloyd Bridges

Um, you seem to have missed all of the subtext of the film. Actually, it's not even very subtextual. Michele is a nut too, that's made quite plain throughout the film. Also, this film was not a flop. It's still playing in theaters and the DVD/BD is a couple weeks away. It won a Golden Globe. The auditorium was packed when I went to see it and it was quite a diverse crowd, there were even old ladies there. Which brings me to my next point: this film is not "corrupting" the youth because this is not a film for the youth. Nobody is "feeding" the youth anything because the youth do not watch arthouse movies. I can't see teenagers saying, "Hey, wanna go see this French arthouse flick by a director who hasn't directed an English-language movie since 2000?" to their friends.

It's one of only maybe two good films released in the past year, and that's accounting for the fact that I think this is one of Verhoeven's weaker entries. I do think it was pretty predictable and didn't have that "OH SHAT!!" factor that say, Black Book had, or even Basic Instinct upon your very first viewing.
