Joaquin Phoenix's abdomen

I found it distracting at first. I don't mean to be a rude *beep* but did Woody Allen instruct Joaquin to put on a fat belly to make him appear older than he is or something? I don't think that's actually a stereotype of philosophy professors or alcoholics for that matter (unless they have cirrhosis). I don't think I've seen Joaquin with such a prominent belly in his other films. Does he have a weight problem?

reply

It was probably Joaquin's idea. It reflects the dissipated, hard drinking, "I don't give a sh!t anymore", attitude of the character.

He always makes a physical change, ( usually with his hair"),to further define his characters.

^ That's what I was thinking. I'm sure he'd eventually have to lose it for some other role. Though I have to say he dosent' appear to me to be a health nut?

He intentionally gained over 30 lbs for the movie.

He lost over 30lbs for The Master. 3 apples and a green salad a day.

For a vegan, he can "balloon up nicely".

Yes! As a vegan myself I know the syndrome. 😦 All I need are a few slices of pizza to make me look like I'm pregnant.

Wasn't the belly fake? Under the shirt it looked really prominent, but when he's lying in the bed, it doesn't look so bad.

No. It was his. Because of his posture, he always has a little pooch, (unless he is very thin as in The Master).
He looks heavier in this film, in general.

His belly in I'm Still Here was a prosthetic.
