Word play in the title. Come on!!

I am a huge Woody Allen fan,

But even I can understand why fans of his, and people in general wouldn't see this as some of his greatest work and can see the flaws in it.

But is anyone else loving the word play in the title?? That's clever Woody Allen at his finest :)

"Irrational Man"

"A rational Man"

Love it, haha. But then again I am a grammar nerd and mad gab is my jam.

Agreed

There's also the fact that Irrational Man is also the title of a 1958 book by William Barrett which was influential in introducing existential philosophy to Americans (and English speakers in general). I'm sure a young Woody Allen read the book. 

I also loved the movie. 

reply

Yes!! I thought about that too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) No doubt in my mind Allen has read that.

reply

The fact that YOU somehow see the words, 'A Rational Man' within the title of "Irrational Man", is not an example of word play; you cant just change Ir to A and consider it some great form of word play, especially when Irrational is its own word in of itself.

... Does anyone else understand what I'm trying to say?

reply

Yes.
It's an overactive imagination at work.

"a malcontent who knows how to spell"

considering what the movie is about, the nature of the lead, and Allen's fame for Irony, and his writing talents I don't consider it me twisting things around or seeing something that isn't there or possibly meant to be there. we dont know for sure if Woody did it on purpose or not but its very possible he did, or left it up to the audience. if we see it or not and if we do see it what we think it might mean. just because you don't look deeper at things, even just maybe a title doesnt mean I am wrong or have an over active imagination like the under imaginative poster beneath us. If that's their first conclusion about my opinion what a boring soul that must be.

reply

That's nonsense.

reply

OK. I don't care about your opinion either way :)

reply

What about mine .... twas utter nonsense

reply

That is indeed complete nonsense. Irrational is the opposite of rational, there's no word play in that! You're just pointing out they have the same root. Brilliant discovery.

right no shi* but his character was both rational and irrational which is what existentialist philosophers could talk about all day.
