Why did Roy go back?

The movie would have been better, had Roy not gone back with Jill. No self respecting male would ever do that. At the least they could have kept it open ended and not even get back to the ROY-Jill relationship. That lady was despicable and did not deserve to be with a great guy like Roy.

I agree. If you think about it, Roy wasn't even necessary to the plot--Jill could've mentioned her interest in Abe to her friends. So why have Roy as a character?--to show Jill's bad side. She just dismissed him.

reply

I think that Roy was a good character, to show Jills flaws. As I said and you agree, he should not have gone back to her. I would have been perfectly ok leaving their relationship status open ended.

Men in Woody Allen movies are like this sometimes.

They tolerate cheating. They are beta males.

Woody is a beta male. That is not an insult.

reply

In many Woody Allen movies, the male does not tolerate cheating. 3 examples: Annie Hall, Manhattan and Anything Else, the male lead accuses his girlfriend of cheating while he himself is cheating also, but that doesn't bother him. I like his films, but that's one quirk I've found.

The beta male opinion is one I agree with; the forgiving schlub is another of Allen's characters characteristics.

I think that Roy taking Jill back fits in with Jill's line to her horse-riding friend about not being as cutting edge as she thought she was.

It could also be related to Abe's remark to Rita about how medicore and average so many of the students are and this was Allen's statement about how the bland, well-to-do class are not compatible with "tormented, genius intellectuals" like Abe.

He was a kid in love. It happens.

This is how you would react/feel and you are entitled to your opinion/feelings, however this does not mean that anyone else will or should feel the same as you. You should word your posts better and rather than trying to dictate what a character SHOULD do you should be prefixing your opinions/feelings with "I would/wouldn't have". Everyone experiences love differently and everyone has different levels of forgiveness and acceptance of flaws etc.
