Why do we need Sharlto Copley to have an American accent?

I like him, he's a favorite and fantastic in most of his movies. But this was so shoehorned and forced. Every line he delivered his face scrunched up like he was trying too hard. Too me out of the movie and the character. What was the point of casting him in this? Especially when he slips in and out of the south african accent. "Steriods" Listen for it, it starts early in the movie and happens throughout.

I thought the exact same thing! He was awful at delivering an American accent with each line. It felt like he didn't even try to cover up his accent at times. He didn't fit this character and I'm not sure why he was cast, other than possible networking and connections. What didn't help was that his character had numerous speaking scenes and I would just cringe when he spoke. I did enjoy him in Elysium though but this role he took on was clearly out of his range.

I hate when actors and actresses don't use their real accents. I mean ? we know Sharlto Copley is South Afrikaans. and Hugh Laurie in House is English ..it's one of my peeves .
