Very safe, formulaic dramedy.

When an actor realizes he'll never be a leading man he usually decides he wants to direct. So he goes to his agent and his agent goes to the studios and the studios ask, 'Who?' and the agent repeats himself and the studios say, 'Oh. That guy?' and the agent says 'He's not particular, he just wants to direct'. And the studio goes to the snooze pile of $10mil greenlit projects and says 'Okay. If he screws this up, lose my number'.

And that's how movies like this are made.

He didn't screw it up. It's so formulaic that I was able to clock the act transitions at half-hour increments. Appropriately, it has the soundtrack of a commercial for a mid-level sedan. The studio will make a return on it's investment. And maybe whatsisname will get another project and we'll discover that he has a unique and exciting directoral voice, but I doubt it.
