7/10: A homage/nostalgia trip to the crime/action/thrillers of cinema.

7/10

In short:
A cinematographical mixture of crime/action throughout cinema history, that is possibly missed by some. With that comes two characters that seems like a mix of a classic police partners, the two leads in Pulp fiction (1994, Vince/Travolta & Jules/Samuel L Jackson) and Michael Douglas in Falling down (1993).

In longer:
Cinematographically nostalgic as it pulls shots from throughout thriller/action/drama/crime history; Around 30-35 minutes in two shots one seemingly from the 30-50's is followed by one from the french crime period with very distinctive separation (the blue background, streelight etc) which is then followed by a shot that look to be from a 90's/Brazilian (south american) movie while the music from the previous shot still runs on.
Around the 45 minute mark we are suddenly in the 60-70's and we even get the classical helicopter overshot that was popular in on the early 90's (often seen in shows such as McGyver, and older ones as Mash, Dallas etc).
Then around the hourmark comes the stereotypical pan of a building view top down to where our heroes are, followed by the clubscene crimescene. About 5-10 minutes later comes the catscene - I canno't right now recall the name of the movie but there is a movie that has a cat like that as a large portion of the plotline (aparantly it is also symbolic in asia - looked it up, it's called; maneki-neko).
Characters overall feel inspired by Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. Main bad guy looks like george Michael.
Latestage the movie turns into a celebration of Boondock Saints (1999) & Falling down (1993).

Pro's
• Leads
• Gore
• I don't think it's clear to many that it's a homage.
• Chemistry between leads and Paul Reiser

Con's
• It's not a strong plotline, or rather it's not woven together well enough to become strong
• It tries to weave in alot of threads and partially misses standing on it's own by doing so

End notes:
It reminds me slightly of Love & Friendship (2016) as was pretty much made to be a guide how make an english period piece. Both movies concoct down a whole genre to one movie and should be viewed by those who might want to direct movies but doesn't have the same interest for viewing movies or learning cinematic history.
It is unoriginal enough to be original itself (the sum of it parts make it a little more).

The clear sentiment that different rules apply if you are informally connected.

I had the feeling that one of the roles was written for Dave Chapelle (guess which).

Ignorance is only a bliss if you haven't reached awareness.
My imdb posts are getting altered.
